Using the Solution Installer

You can use the Solution Installer to install, uninstall, and update solutions or applications to an IBM® WebSphere® Portal server instance. The Solution Installer uses the Portal Application Archive (PAA) format as the standard format for application distribution.

About this task

Portal Administrators can use the Solution Installer to install existing PAA-formatted applications to the WebSphere Portal server instance. Portal Solution Developers can use the Solution Installer to install PAA-formatted applications they develop for their company.

Complete the following tasks to use the Solution Installer:

  • Migrating PAA content
    If you installed a Portal Application Archive (PAA) file on a previous version of IBM WebSphere Portal, you can migrate the content to the current version of WebSphere Portal.
  • Installing a Portal Application Archive (PAA) file
    After installing IBM WebSphere Portal, you can use the Solution Installer to install applications that are in the Portal Application Archive (PAA) format.
  • Solution Installer run time configuration
    The Solution Installer run time configuration properties allows you to control how the Solution Installer installs a Portal Application Archive (PAA) formatting application to IBM WebSphere Portal.
  • Developing basic solution applications
    Solution developers can create their own Portal Application Archive (PAA) file. The developers can then use the Solution Installer to install their application in the IBM WebSphere Portal environment.
  • Developing advanced solution applications
    Solution developers can create their own advanced Portal Application Archive (PAA) file. The advanced PAA file contains custom content.
  • Removing a PAA assembly
    You must remove the installed content and resources of a Portal Application Archive (PAA) assembly from IBM WebSphere Portal before removing the associated PAA assembly from the ConfigEngine.
  • Deleting PAA content after an uninstallation
    After running the uninstall-paa task and removing the assembly from the ConfigEngine registry, the PAA content remains in the PAA directory. To remove any remaining content run the delete-paa command. This command inspects the PAA directory and removes content that is not registered.
