IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, Version 7.1

Configuring the client scheduler

This task guides you through the steps to configure the client scheduler.

Your Tivoli® Storage Manager administrator can schedule Tivoli Storage Manager to perform tasks automatically.

For example, you can automatically back up files at the end of each day or archive some of your files every Friday. This procedure, which is known as central scheduling, is a cooperative effort between the server and your client node. Your administrator associates clients with one or more schedules that are part of the policy domain that is maintained in the server database. The Tivoli Storage Manager administrator defines central scheduling on the server and you start the client scheduler on your workstation. After you start the client scheduler, further intervention is not necessary.

With client scheduling, you can perform the following tasks:

Client acceptor daemon-managed services
  • Defined by using the managedservices schedule option and started with client acceptor daemon services (dsmcad).
  • The client acceptor daemon starts and stops the scheduler process as needed for each scheduled action.
  • Requires fewer system resources when idle.
  • Tivoli Storage Manager client options and Tivoli Storage Manager server override options are refreshed each time the client acceptor daemon services start a scheduled backup.
  • Cannot be used with SESSIONINITiation=SERVEROnly backups.
Tivoli Storage Manager traditional scheduler services
  • Started with command dsmc sched command.
  • Remains active, even after scheduled backup is complete.
  • Requires higher use of system resources when idle.
  • Tivoli Storage Manager client options and Tivoli Storage Manager server override options are only processed once when dsmc sched is started.
  • You must restart the scheduler process for updated Tivoli Storage Manager options to take effect.

Tip: Restart the traditional scheduler periodically to free system resources previously used by system calls.

Mac OS X operating systems AIX operating systems HP-UX operating systems Linux operating systems Oracle Solaris operating systems The Tivoli Storage Manager client acceptor daemon can manage the scheduler. In this case, the CAD serves as an external timer for the scheduler. When the scheduler is started, it queries the server for the next scheduled event. The event is either run immediately or the scheduler exits. The CAD restarts the scheduler when it is time to run the scheduled event, which reduces the number of background processes on your workstation and resolves memory retention problems that can occur when the scheduler is run without CAD management.

Windows operating systems The Tivoli Storage Manager Client Acceptor service (CAD) can manage the scheduler. In this case, the CAD serves as an external timer for the scheduler. When the scheduler is started, it queries the server for the next scheduled event. The event is either run immediately or the scheduler exits. The CAD restarts the scheduler when it is time to run the scheduled event. This reduces the number of background processes on your workstation and resolves memory retention problems that can occur when the scheduler is run without CAD management.

You cannot use the dsmcad for scheduling when you set the sessioninitiation option to serveronly.

Mac OS X operating systems AIX operating systems HP-UX operating systems Linux operating systems Oracle Solaris operating systems Use the managedservices option in your client system-options file (dsm.sys) to specify whether the CAD manages the scheduler.

Windows operating systems Use the managedservices option in your client options file (dsm.opt) to specify whether the CAD manages the scheduler.

Important: If you run the client scheduler on the command line, the scheduler does not run as a background service.

Perform the following steps to configure the CAD to manage the client scheduler:

Mac OS X operating systems AIX operating systems HP-UX operating systems Linux operating systems Oracle Solaris operating systems
  1. From the Tivoli Storage Manager GUI, select Edit > Preferences, and then select the web Client tab. Select the Schedule option in the Managed Services options section. If you also want the CAD to manage the web client, select the Both option.
  2. Start the Client Acceptor.
Windows operating systems
  1. In the Tivoli Storage Manager GUI, select Utilities > Setup Wizard > Help me configure the TSM Client Scheduler and click Next.
  2. Read the scheduler wizard screen text and click NEXT.
  3. Select Install a new or additional scheduler and click Next.
  4. Specify a name for the scheduler; the default name is TSM Client Scheduler. Select Use the Client Acceptor daemon (CAD) to manage the scheduler and click Next.
  5. Specify a name for the client acceptor service that you want to manage the scheduler. If the CAD is already installed for use by the web client, select that CAD name from the drop-down list. Otherwise, type the name that you want to assign to this CAD. The default name is TSM Client Acceptor. Click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions on the remaining screens to complete the configuration.
Note:
  • Windows operating systems If the sessioninitiation option is set to serveronly in your client options file (dsm.opt), the client setup wizard and scheduler service might be unable to initiate authentication with the Tivoli Storage Manager server. To avoid this problem, ensure that the Contact the TSM Server to validate password check box on the TSM Authentication page is cleared.
  • Windows operating systems In the Service login options window, select the Automatically when Windows boots option to have the service automatically started when Windows starts so that your schedules are run.
  • Windows operating systems You can also use the Scheduler Service Configuration utility. The Scheduler Service Configuration utility must be run from an account that belongs to the Administrator/Domain Administrator group. You can start multiple client scheduler services on your system.
  • Windows operating systems If you are having the CAD manage your schedule, start the CAD service, but do not start the scheduler service. The scheduler service is started and stopped automatically by the CAD service as needed. If you are not managing the schedule with the CAD, then you can use the services Control Panel or the net start command to start the Scheduler service.
  • If you include files for encryption, ensure that the encryptkey option is set to save is in the options file. This option is set by selecting Save Encryption Key Password Locally on the Authorization panel in the preference editor. Setting this option enables unattended scheduled services. If the encryption key has not been previously saved, you must perform an attended backup of at least one file so that you get the encryption prompt and you can save the key.
