Updating the IBM Cognos BI service

If you need to apply service to the IBM® Cognos® Business Intelligence service that is installed with IBM Business Monitor, follow the IBM Cognos BI service update instructions and apply the service to all nodes, including the deployment manager node. After the service has been applied, regenerate the IBM Cognos BI application EAR file and deploy the new EAR file.

To update IBM Cognos BI, complete the following steps:

1. Stop all servers that are running IBM Cognos BI. You do not need to stop the deployment manager and nodes.
2. Follow the IBM Cognos BI service normal update processes for the fix packs and interim fixes. The service must be applied to all nodes, including the deployment manager, and needs to be applied only to the base installed IBM Cognos BI under the app_server_root/cognos directory. The runtime copy of IBM Cognos BI under the profile will be updated during the first server startup.
3. Regenerate the IBM Cognos BI application EAR file, following the instructions in Generating an EAR file for IBM Cognos BI.
4. Use the administrative console to update the IBM Cognos application with the new EAR file.
5. Perform a full node synchronization. This process takes some time because the EAR is large and must be replaced on each node.
6. Start only one server that is running the IBM Cognos BI service. Starting only one server ensures that any upgrades to the IBM Cognos BI content store database are attempted by only one process. Once the first server has completed the initialization and is running, start the other IBM Cognos BI servers. During the first startup of each server, the runtime copy of IBM Cognos BI will be replaced by the updated version in the app_server_root/cognos directory. The replacement will take some time because the runtime code is large.
