DB2 10.5 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows

Entitlement by limited use virtual server

You can purchase DB2® Express® Server Edition licenses per limited use virtual server (LUV server), per processor, or per user.

For information about the processor or user entitlements, refer to Entitlement by processor or users.

A limited use virtual server is a physical server or a virtual server that is created by partitioning the resources available to a physical server.

You must acquire one limited use virtual server license for each limited use virtual server on which DB2 Express Server Edition is installed. The total amount of resources allocated to all DB2 database manager instances on a given limited use virtual server cannot collectively exceed 4 processor cores. The DB2 database system will not use more than 4 GB of memory for 4 processor cores.

Example

Example 1: One nonpartitioned physical server with 16 processor cores

If you install a single copy of DB2 Express Server Edition Version 10.5 on a nonpartitioned physical server with sixteen processor cores, you require a single LUV server license. However, you may not install and run two copies of DB2 Express Server EditionV10.5 in such a nonpartitioned server because you cannot limit each instances' use to the same 4 processor cores.

Example 2: One nonpartitioned physical server with four processor cores

If your nonpartitioned server contains only four processor cores in total, you may install and run as many copies of DB2 Express Server Edition as you wish; each copy is limited to the same four processor cores.

Example 3: One physical server with 16 processor cores partitioned into two virtual servers (each having eight processor cores)

If your physical server with 16 processor cores is partitioned into two virtual servers, each using eight process cores, and you install a copy of DB2 Express Server Edition on each of the two virtual servers, then you must obtain two limited use virtual server licenses. In this case, you are limited to one copy of DB2 Express Server Edition on each virtual server. This limitation exists because you cannot limit each instance's use to the same four processor cores if more than one copy of DB2 Express Server Edition is installed on one of the 8-processor core virtual servers.

Example 4: One physical server with 16 processor cores partitioned into four virtual servers (each having four processor cores)

If your physical server with 16 processor cores is partitioned into four virtual servers, each using four processor cores, and you install a copy of DB2 Express Server Edition on each on of the four virtual servers, then you must obtain four limited use virtual server licenses. Since each of the four virtual servers are limited to four processor cores, you can install as many copies of DB2 Express Server Edition as you wish on the virtual servers; all of the copies of DB2 Express Server Edition would be limited to using four processor cores.
