System-coded character set identifiers

To support character conversion, the IBM® Distributed Relational Database Architecture™ (DRDA) uses CCSIDs to label the various character representation schemes.

The CCSID is a two-byte binary number that uniquely identifies one or more pairs of character sets and code pages. The coded character set defines how bit configurations are mapped for character data.

The CCSID of character strings at your site is determined by the CCSID that you specify on installation panel DSNTIPF.

The correct CCSID is the number that identifies the coded character set that is supported by your I/O device.

Attention: If this CCSID is not correct, character conversion produces incorrect results.

Unicode support in DB2
Unicode is a universal encoding scheme for written characters and text that enables the exchange of data internationally. Unicode provides a character set standard that can be used all over the world.
Customizing support for Unicode
You must customize z/OS® Unicode support to use Unicode data in DB2.
EBCDIC and ASCII support
DB2 supports both EBCDIC and ASCII encoding of data.
Implications of character conversions
Some character conversions have implications that you should be aware of. For example, when a character string is converted to another encoding scheme, the converted string might have a different length from the source string. In this case, the conversion is an expanding conversion or a contracting conversion.
Euro symbol support
DB2 enables users to migrate to CCSIDs that support the euro symbol. This support is limited to conversion from specific CCSIDs that do not define the euro symbol to specific CCSIDs that define the euro symbol.
