Accessing product repositories on z/OS

WebSphere® Application Server Version 9.0 products are distributed as IBM® Installation Manager repositories. These repositories contain the metadata and files that are required to create one or more levels of a particular product.

Before you begin

Verify that you can access the product files. If you plan to install the product from the web-based repositories, you must have an IBM user ID and password. To download the product from the ShopzSeries website, you must additionally register for access to the site.

About this task

This procedure uses several Installation Manager sample jobs to access the product repositories. You can find these jobs in the GIN.SGINJCL data set that is installed as part of FMID HGIN140. You can also download the sample jobs by following the instructions on the Sample jobs for IBM Installation Manager on z/OS® page.

Procedure

Choose one of the following options to access the product repositories:

  • Install from web-based product and service repositories.
You can install both the initial product and the latest fix-pack level from the online repositories.
    1. Create a master.password file that contains text to be used for an encryption key, and place the file in your Installation Manager file system. The recommended location is /InstallationManager/master.password.
    2. Edit and submit the GIN3CRED Installation Manager sample job to create an im.ssf credentials file that contains your IBM user ID and password.

If you use a firewall proxy to access the IBM website, the credentials file also contains the firewall credentials.

  • Install from local product and service repositories.
    1. Edit and submit the GIN3REPO Installation Manager sample job to allocate and mount a local repository file system at the /InstallationManager/repo location.
    2. For the initial product level, copy the following files from the product media or download them from the ShopzSeries website, and transfer them to your z/OS system. If you use FTP, be sure to transfer the files in binary format.
      was.repo.9000.zOS.zip
Initial repository for WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.

      ShopzSeries download name: cd770140.zip

      was.repo.9000.plugins.zOS.zip
Initial repository for Web Server Plug-ins for WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.

      ShopzSeries download name: cd770160.zip

      was.repo.9000.ihs.zOS.zip
Initial repository for IBM HTTP Server for z/OS.

      ShopzSeries download name: cd770170.zip

      Notes:
      • For physical media, the files are on the z/OS Compressed Repositories DVD. Transfer them in binary to your z/OS system.
      • For ShopzSeries, go to the Downloads page for your order and select Additional Publications for either Download Director or HTTP. Download each file using the download name listed previously, then rename the file to the repository ZIP file name (for example, was.repo.9000.zOS.zip) and transfer it in binary to your z/OS system.

Place the listed files in the /InstallationManager/repo directory. These files do not need to be decompressed, but make sure the Installation Manager user ID or group can read them.

    3. Download the latest fix pack repositories from IBM Fix Central, and copy them to your z/OS system. If you use FTP, be sure to transfer the files in binary format.
      9.0.0-WS-WAS-ZOS-FPnnn.zip
Fix pack repository for WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
      9.0.0-WS-PLG-ZOS-FPnnn.zip
Fix pack repository for Web Server Plug-ins for WebSphere Application Server for z/OS.
      9.0.0-WS-IHS-ZOS-FPnnn.zip
Fix pack repository for IBM HTTP Server for z/OS.
      ibm-java-sdk-8.0-n.n-zos-s390x-installmgr.zip
Fix pack repository for IBM SDK, Java™ Technology Edition, Version 8.

Place the files in the /InstallationManager/repo directory. You do not need to decompress the files, but make sure that the Installation Manager user ID or group can read them.

Results

You can access the initial product repositories and optional service repositories.

To display the exact contents of the repositories, use the Installation Manager imcl listAvailablePackages command. See the GIN3LSTA Installation Manager sample job for web-based repositories and the GIN3LSTL sample job for local repositories.

What to do next

When you use IBM Installation Manager to install WebSphere Application Server Version 9.0 products, specify the path to the appropriate web-based or local repositories on the -repositories parameter of the imcl command.
