Internet Service Monitoring monitors in detail

The core components of Internet Service Monitoring are the monitors, which test the availability and performance of an Internet service.

Each monitor is designed to test one type of protocol or service. For example, the HTTP monitor tests the availability of resources such as web pages over the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, and the FTP monitor tests the transfer of files between hosts running the File Transfer Protocol. Monitors generate an event recording the result of each test, which they send to the Databridge for further processing.

Monitors emulate the actions of a real user of the service. For example, the HTTP monitor periodically attempts to access a web page by emulating requests that a web browser would usually send when a user visits the page.

Figure 1 shows the components of a typical Internet Service Monitoring deployment.
