Running a failback recovery operation

You can confirm the volume pairs that are used for a disaster recovery failback operation. The failback operation copies all modified tracks from a target volume to a source volume.

Before you begin

You must first create a remote mirror and copy volume pair. Before you run the failback operation, the volumes must be full-duplex. You must create mirroring connectivity (previously known as paths) between the LSSs from the target site to the source site and from the source to the target site.

About this task

When you are ready to return to Site A (your production site), use the failback operation (on the Volume A-Volume B pair) from Site B (your recovery site). This process makes the target volume (Volume B) transition to a source and the original source volume (Volume A) transition to a new target volume. The process resynchronizes the volumes at Site B with the volumes at Site A. At Site B, ensure that the failback process is complete and that the volume pair is duplex.

Procedure

Complete the following steps from the DS Storage Manager to confirm the volume pairs in which a failback operation is run.

  1. In the navigation, select Copy Services > Metro Mirror/Global Copy. Select the volume pair in which the failover operation was run. The status of the volume pair should display as suspended.
  2. Select Recovery Failback from the Action menu and then click OK. The Recovery Failback window displays the volume pairs for the failback process. The status of the volume pairs should display as suspended.
  3. Optional: Click Advanced Options to update options for the Metro Mirror or Global Copy relationship before you run the recovery failback.
    Options include:
    Reset reservation
Clears any host reservations on the target volume of the pair. This option is only available for FB volume pairs.
Suspend Metro Mirror relationship after initial copy
Automatically suspends the Metro Mirror relationship after the relationship is created. This option is only valid for Metro Mirror volume relationships.
    Cascading
Specifies that the remote mirror and copy target volume can also serve as a source volume for a different remote mirror and copy volume relationship.
    Permit read access from target
Enables hosts to read from the Metro Mirror target volume. For the host to read the volume, the state of the Metro Mirror pair must be full-duplex. This option is only valid for FB volumes.
Create relationships even if target is online to a host
Establishes a Metro Mirror volume relationship even if the target volume is online to the hosts. This option is only valid for S/390® or CKD volumes.
    Enable critical volume mode
Determines how write operations are managed when an error occurs on a volume pair. The volume pair remains suspended until you correct the problem and either resynchronize or delete the volume pair.
    Disable auto-resync
Disables the auto-resync function for the Global Copy pair. This option is available when at least one of the selected relationships is a Global Copy relationship. Every time the Global Copy pair is established or resynchronized, you must either enable or disable auto-resync. This control does not affect Metro Mirror relationships.
After you select the appropriate options, click OK to return to the Recovery Failback window.
  4. Click OK to complete the process. Otherwise, click Cancel and your selection is canceled and the page closes.
