Configuring the disk subsystem in the 5802 expansion unit

Learn how to configure the SAS disk subsystem in the 5802 expansion unit.

Note: For 5802 expansion unit connector locations referred to in this procedure, see Model 5802 and 5877 connector locations.
  1. The SAS disk subsystem in the 5802 expansion unit can hold up to 18 disk drives. The disks in this subsystem can be organized in several different configurations depending on the operating system used, the type of SAS adapter, and the position of the hard-disk-drive partitions switch.
    Notes:
    • The hard-disk-drive partitions switch is located at the rear of the 5802 expansion unit, just below the SAS connectors.
    • If the hard-disk-drive partitions switch position is changed, you must power the 5802 expansion unit off and on in order for the 5802 to sense the new position of the hard-disk-drive partitions switch.
The SAS disk subsystem in the 5802 expansion unit is supported by the following operating systems:
    • AIX®
    • IBM® i
    • Linux
    • VIOS

To determine the level of software you need to support the SAS disk subsystem in the 5802 expansion unit, see IBM Prerequisite.

Tip: If you are planning to configure RAID arrays, ensure that you have the minimum number of available disks for each RAID level:
    RAID 0
Minimum of one drive per array
    RAID 5
Minimum of three drives per array
    RAID 6
Minimum of four drives per array
    RAID 10
Minimum of two drives per array
