Verifying that the destination server supports suspend-capable partitions

To migrate an AIX®, IBM® i, or Linux mobile partition that is capable of suspension, verify that the destination server supports suspend-capable partitions by using the Hardware Management Console (HMC).

With HMC 7.7.2.0, or later, you can suspend an AIX, IBM i, or Linux logical partition with its operating system and applications, and store its virtual server state to persistent storage. At a later stage, you can resume the operation of the logical partition. The Suspend/Resume feature for logical partitions is supported on POWER8® processor-based servers when the firmware is at level FW840, or later.

To verify that the destination server supports suspend-capable partitions, complete the following tasks:

  1. In the navigation pane, open Systems Management and select Servers.
  2. Select the destination server in the work pane.
  3. From the Tasks menu, select Properties.
  4. Click the Capabilities tab.
    • If Partition Suspend Capable is True, the destination server supports suspend-capable partitions.
    • If Partition Suspend Capable is False, the destination server does not support suspend-capable partitions, and you cannot migrate the mobile partition to the server. To migrate the mobile partition, change the partition configuration so that it is not capable of suspension.
  5. Click OK.

The HMC Classic interface is not supported in Hardware Management Console (HMC) Version 8.7.0, or later. The functions that were previously available in the HMC Classic interface are now available in the HMC Enhanced+ interface.

When the HMC is at version 8.7.0, or later, complete the following steps to verify that the destination server supports suspend-capable partitions
    1. In the navigation pane, click the Resources icon The icon represents the Resources function of the HMC.
    2. Click All Systems. The All Systems page is displayed.
    3. In the work pane, select the system and click Actions > View System Properties. The Properties page is displayed.
    4. Click Licensed Capabilities. The Licensed Capabilities page lists the features that are supported by the server.
      • If Partition Suspend Capable is marked by the The icon represents the availability of a feature in the HMC icon, the destination server supports suspend-capable partitions.
      • If Partition Suspend Capable is marked by the The icon represents the non-availability of a feature in the HMC icon, the destination server does not support suspend-capable partitions, and you cannot migrate the mobile partition to the server. To migrate the mobile partition, change the partition configuration so that it is not capable of suspension.
