Resource Monitoring and Control connections

Learn about the different Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC) connection configurations that can result from using different Hardware Management Console (HMC) and Reliable Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) versions and levels.

Use the following tables to find the required RSCT levels and operating system (OS) packages and to see the differences in RMC connections.

Table 1. Required levels
Configuration Required levels

RSCT level that supports HMC Version 8.2.0.

RSCT Version 3.2.0.0

OS packages that include RSCT Version 3.2.0.0 for AIX®.

OS 61C or 71Q series

RSCT upgrade on Linux partition.

If you are unable to upgrade to the RSCT 64-bit level for Linux partition, first locate and uninstall all RSCT packages and then install the new RSCT file set.

Table 2. RMC connection scenarios
Scenarios Result

Server is connected to multiple HMCs running on Versions 8.2.0 and 8.1.0.1 while in NIST SP 800-131a security mode.

The HMC Version 8.2.0 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode) manages the logical partition (LPAR) that is running on the newer RSCT level (RSCT Version 3.2.0.0). Any LPARs that are running on older RSCT levels lose the RMC connection.

The HMC Version 8.1.0.1 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode) manages the LPARs that are running on older RSCT levels. The LPAR that is running on the newer RSCT level (RSCT Version 3.2.0.0) loses the RMC connection.

Server is connected to an HMC running on Version 8.2.0 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode) and then connected to an HMC running on Version 8.1.0.1 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode).

When connected to the HMC Version 8.2.0 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode), the HMC manages the LPAR that is running on the newer RSCT level (RSCT Version 3.2.0.0). Any LPARs that are running on older RSCT levels are not managed by the HMC Version 8.2.0 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode).

After connecting to the HMC Version 8.1.0.1 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode), the RMC connection remains active for any LPARs that are running on older RSCT levels. Any LPARs that are running on the newer RSCT level (RSCT Version 3.2.0.0) loses the RMC connection.

When the LPAR that is running on the newer RSCT level (RSCT Version 3.2.0.0) looses the RMC connection on HMC Version 8.1.0.1 (NIST SP 800-131a security mode), you can run the following command to recover the RMC connection: /usr/sbin/rsct/bin/chsecmode -c none -m rsa512

Server is connected to an HMC running on Version 8.2.0 while in NIST SP 800-131a security mode first and then the HMC security mode is switched to Legacy.

The LPAR that is running on the newer RSCT level (RSCT Version 3.2.0.0) maintains the RMC connection.
