Choosing an Internet Protocol

Determine the IP address version used when the HMC connects to your service provider.

Most users use Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) to connect to a service provider. IPv4 addresses appear in the format representing the four bytes of the IPv4 address, separated by periods (for example, 9.60.12.123) to access the Internet. You can also use Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) to connect to a service provider. IPv6 is often used by network administrators to ensure unique address space. If you are unsure of the Internet Protocol used by your installation, contact your network administrator. For more information about using each version, see Setting the IPv4 address and Setting the IPv6 address.
