For upgrade instructions for Watson Explorer version 11.0.0.3 or earlier, see Upgrade Path from Earlier Versions

Upgrade Path from Earlier Versions

In order to upgrade to version 11.0.2 from an earlier version of Watson Explorer Foundational Components, you need to follow an upgrade path. If you have never installed any version of Watson Explorer Foundational components, you can install directly to 11.0.2 -- you don't need to install 11.0.0 first.

Note: Always check the System Requirements and Upgrade Considerations before beginning an upgrade.

Note: All versions previous to 11.0.0.1 are installed and uninstalled using Installation Manager. Beginning with version 11.0.0.1, Watson Explorer Foundational Components are installed and uninstalled using a new installer. Version 11.0.2 uses the new installer.

Note: The Velocity command-line utilities (velocity-startup, velocity-shutdown, velocity-webserver, velocity-cmd, and velocity-config) have been completely replaced with new tools in Watson Explorer Engine version 11.0.2. The new tools, originally introduced in Watson Explorer Engine version 11.0.0.3, are: engine-start, engine-shutdown, engine-cmd, engine-export, engine-import, engine-status, generate-key, embedded-webserver, and embedded-webserver-config. The new Engine utilities cannot be used interchangeably with the Velocity utilities. If your startup, shutdown, and other processes use the Velocity utilities, you will need to update them after upgrading to Watson Explorer version 11.0.2. Upgrade considerations for Watson Explorer Foundational Components 11.0.2

Before you upgrade to the foundational components of Watson Explorer Version 11.0.2 from a previous version of Watson Explorer, review the following considerations. These upgrade considerations apply to previous versions of Watson Explorer including the versions that were formerly known as IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer and Vivisimo Velocity.

Note

Beginning with Watson Explorer Version 11.0.0.1, Installation Manager is no longer used to install Watson Explorer. See the PDF that is attached to this page named "WATSON_EXPLORER_V11.0.2_INSTALL_GUIDE.pdf" or Watson Explorer Upgrade Options for upgrade instructions. If you are upgrading to Watson 11.0.2 from an earlier version, see Upgrade Path from Earlier Versions.

Installation

  • Upgrading the Results Module from Watson Explorer version 11.0.0.1 to 11.0.2 will fail. To workaround this issue:

On Windows (using Powershell as an Administrator):
    PS > sc.exe stop resultsmodule-service
    PS > cp ${results_module_install_dir}/wlp/usr/servers/ResultsModule/apps/ResultsModule/WEB-INF/db/production.sqlite3 .
    PS > msiexec /i wex-resultsmodule-11.0.2-ae_en.msi
    PS > cp ./production.sqlite3 ${results_module_install_dir}/wlp/usr/servers/ResultsModule/apps/ResultsModule/WEB-INF/db/

    On Linux (as Root):
    # service resultsmodule-service stop
    # cp ${results_module_install_dir}/wlp/usr/servers/ResultsModule/apps/ResultsModule/WEB-INF/db/production.sqlite3 .
    # rpm -Uvh wex-resultsmodule-11.0.2-ae_en.rpm
    # cp ./production.sqlite3 ${results_module_install_dir}/wlp/usr/servers/ResultsModule/apps/ResultsModule/WEB-INF/db/
    # chown wex-resultsmodule:ibm-wex ${results_module_install_dir}/wlp/usr/servers/ResultsModule/apps/ResultsModule/WEB-INF/db/production.sqlite3

  • Web Parts for Watson Explorer Engine: In some cases, you may need to delete SharePoint Web Parts feature references to successfully reinstall or upgrade Web Parts for Watson Explorer Engine. To do so, use the following PowerShell commands:

    Uninstall-SPFeature –Identity e554334a-3a66-4961-9545-377d8b7a7063

    Uninstall-SPFeature –Identity c1a00985-139c-408e-a958-1bb31480592a

Watson Explorer Engine

  • If you set up remote-push in a version of Watson Explorer earlier than version 11.0.0.1, and did not have user names and passwords specified in your remote-push configuration, remote-push and mirror configurations will stop working when you install Watson Explorer version 11.0.2. In addition, if your remote-push configuration includes unencrypted passwords, remote-push will stop working when you install Watson Explorer version 11.0.2. To fix this issue, see High Availability and Scalability Through Distributed Indices.
  • Beginning with version 11.0.0.3, the Excel [XLSX to HTML] and PDF converters were upgraded to no longer require a JVM. If you are upgrading from version 11.0.0.3 or earlier to 11.0.2, the "type='converter-java'" attribute will remain in the collection configuration XML for collections created before the upgrade. To avoid the initialization of a potentially unneeded JVM for these collections, the "type='converter-java'" attribute should be removed from these specific converters. This can be done by editing the collection configuration XML directly.
  • Watson Explorer Engine Connectivity

    • Watson Explorer Engine Connectors are updated frequently. Check IBM Fix Central for the latest versions.
