This white paper intends to provide you with an overview of Makefiles and how they are generated in IBM Rational Rhapsody and contains precise information on the contents of the Rhapsody Make file, tips that can be used practically to tweak them and also includes a few of the known limitations.

This paper is Part 1 of a 3 Part series.

Part 1 includes a general overview of Makefile, sections, its generation in Rational Rhapsody and the limitations. Special addition has been made with regards to information on the Makefile generation for Rhapsody in Ada language; however, the scope of this paper does not cover the entire documentation on Makefiles for a beginner. By the end of this article, you will have a fair understanding of makefiles and its constituents.

Part 2 intends to cover the Rational Rhapsody properties that affect the generation of Makefiles.

Part 3 will cover the specific Makefile sections and provide explanation for all the environments in which it works.
