Additional information

You can find additional information in the WebSphere Application Server Version 6.1 Information Center.

The readme_updateinstaller.html file in the V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs contains more detailed information about applying Fix Packs to more than one product on a machine. It also has detailed information about each of the two interfaces to the update installer application, which are the updateSilent and updateWizard interfaces.

The List of Fixes and the Release Notes for V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs can be found on Release Notes/List of Fixes for IBM SDKs for Linux, AIX, and z/OS platforms. The list of fixes for Solaris™ and HPUX can be found on their support sites.

Prerequisites

Install the version 6.1 product from the appropriate compact disc or distribution media.

Install the version 7.0 Update Installer (or later) from the Update Installer version 7.0 download page.

You very likely already have one installed, but only 7.0 or later level of Update Installer can be used.

Install the appropriate V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDK on top of Application Server Base, Network Deployment, or Enterprise Edition, which extends the base product or the Network Deployment product. This service pack can also be installed on top of any V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs that might have already been installed on top of these products.

Before installing this SDK on Sun or HP-UX platforms, the latest recommended patches must be applied to the system. The list of fixes for Solaris™ and HPUX can be found on their support sites.

A Java Runtime Environment must be available, even if the Java installation is not updated.

Download V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs to a read/write directory as described in Installing V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs. Installing from a read-only drive is not supported.

All required hardware and software prerequisites are described in the WebSphere Application Server detailed system requirements.

Space requirements

Space requirements vary depending on what you are installing. The size of each download is available on the Support site. For a V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs, have approximately 400 MB of free space in the /tmp directory and another 400 MB in the file system that hosts the Application Server image (typically /usr) on a Linux-based or UNIX®-based platform, or approximately 800 MB of free space on the disk drive where you are installing on a Windows platform.

Verify that the free space is available before beginning the installation. After the code is installed, the V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs code increases the Application Server installation and run-time footprints by a small amount.

Space is also required for the /update directory of the product installation root. The space required is about the same as the size of the V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs, typically somewhere between 50 MB to 250 MB.

Space is also required for backup files in the /properties/version/backup directory of the product installation root. The space required is about the same as the size of the Java 2 SDK Service Pack, somewhere between 50 MB to 250 MB, varying by product and platform.

The update installer checks for required space before it installs the V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs. However, a bug exists in the space checker when installing V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs.

When installing V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs, the update installer checks for required disk space in the /tmp directory and in the backup directory. If the /tmp directory or the backup directory have insufficient space, the update installer issues a warning message.

Steps for installing V6.1 Cumulative Fix for SDKs
  1. Run the backupConfig command to back up configuration files. See Backing up and restoring administrative configurations in the online Information Center.

  2. Verify required disk space, as described in the readme file for the maintenance package.

  3. After backing up the configuration and before installing Java SDK 1.5 SR16 Cumulative Fix (also known as Fix Pack 6.1.0.47 SDK), stop all Java processes associated with Java SDK shipped with WebSphere Application Server to support Java 1.5 SDK.

  4. Stop all application server processes, the nodeagent process, the deployment manager process, and all server processes that belong to serviceable products, such as the IBM HTTP Server. Stop all Java processes, if necessary. The product might not continue to operate successfully if it attempts to install Fix Pack 6.1.0.47 SDK while a WebSphere Application Server-related Java process is still running.

  5. Download the latest available Update Installer version (7.0) from the Update Installer version 7.0 download page. Extract the downloaded Update Installer package to a temporary directory. Navigate into the UpdateInstaller subdirectory which was extracted in the previous step. Install the Update Installer by running the install or install.exe executable.

  6. Obtain downloadable maintenance packages from Java SDK 1.5 SR17 Cumulative Fix for IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.1.0.47.

Download the packages into the update installer maintenance directory:

  7. updi_install_root/maintenance

  8. To install downloaded maintenance packages, refer to instructions found in the Update Installer installation documentation directory:

  9. updi_install_root/docs/readme_updateinstaller.html

Additional instructions can be found in the Information Center, Installing Maintenance Packages.

Installation instructions are summarized and repeated here for convenience only, refer to the preceding official published sources.

Open a command shell window and change directories to the updi_install_root install location of the V6.1 Update Installer.

    cd updi_install_root

Use the update command to install the maintenance package that you downloaded into updi_install_root/maintenance directory:

The Update Installer wizard can run in silent mode without graphical user interface and responsefile can be configured for automatic installation.
    • For Windows:

    • update –silent –options  responsefile

    • For Linux or UNIX platforms:

    • ./update.sh –silent –options  responsefile

And, graphical user interface mode is available by update command without any parameter:
    • For Windows:

    • update.bat

    • For Linux or UNIX platforms:

    • ./update.sh

Refer to the following file for detailed information about using the update command:

    updi_install_root/docs/readme_updateinstaller.html

Finding the readme_updateinstaller.txt, readme_updateinstaller.html and readme_updateinstaller.pdf files

Open the readme_updateinstaller file in the format of your choice for more information about using the updateWizard.sh or the updateWizard.bat scripts, and for information about using the updateSilent.sh or updateSilent.bat scripts. The updateSilent scripts let you install a Fix Pack silently without interaction. It is useful for installing a Fix Pack in an environment that does not provide a graphical user interface, for example.

The readme_updateinstaller file describes an overall procedure for installing multiple Fix Packs on machines with multiple products, including how to install an Enterprise product Fix Pack, and how to install Fix Packs on nodes in a deployment manager cell.

The readme_updateinstaller file describes how to verify that you have successfully installed the Fix Pack.

The readme_updateinstaller file also describes how to uninstall a Fix Pack.
