Administering the system

Long delay occurs when removing an extra virtual machine, when the stopped machine is restarted from the hypervisor
Problem If a virtual machine (VM) for a non-persistent, single node virtual application is unexpectedly stopped (VM is shut down from the operating system), the virtual application will detect this condition and start up a new VM to reduce service downtime for the virtual application. If the original VM is restarted again from the hypervisor, the virtual application will delete one of the VMs to ensure that only one VM is running for the single node virtual application.

In some instances, significant delays (hours) might occur before the virtual application detects the restarted VM and removes the duplicate VM. Because of this, two VMs might run in the single node virtual application for an extended period of time.
Resolution
  1. Click one of the VMs in the Virtual application instances panel (Workload console > Instances > Virtual application instances).
  2. Click Stop to stop the extra VM.
  3. Click Delete to remove the VM from the virtual applications.

Slow response occurs when viewing the details page for a virtual image in the catalog
Problem While importing multiple virtual images containing LVM or EXT4 partitions, the response time for viewing the details of an existing virtual image in the catalog is slow.
Resolution Only import one LVM or EXT4 based image at a time.

The Upgrade button is disabled following a Revert operation
Problem An intermittent problem exists where the virtual application or shared service is upgraded and subsequently reverted. The steps that trigger this problem are as follows:
  1. Upgrade the virtual application or shared service instance.
  2. After upgrade has completed, click Revert to revert the instance back to the original level.
  3. After the revert has completed, the Upgrade button is disabled on the instance page. The user is prevented from performing any subsequent upgrade operations on that instance.
  4. Additionally, after clicking the Maintain button on the instance page to enter maintenance mode, the Resume button can also become disabled. The user cannot exit from maintenance mode as a result of the disabled Resume button.
Resolution Delete the actions.json file in the storehouse for the current instance by doing the following steps:
  1. Log in using an administrator account.
  2. From the workload console, expand the System menu item and select Storehouse Browser.
  3. On the Storehouse Browser page, navigate to the following file: /user/deployments/<deployment_id>/actions.json.
  4. Delete this file using an appropriate tool, such as POSTER.

Errors occur when upgrading an Application Pattern Type for Java from Versions 1.0.0.1 - 1.0.0.3
Problem If you attempt to upgrade IBM Application Pattern Type for Java from Versions 1.0.0.1 - 1.0.0.3 to later versions, errors occur and the upgrade operation fails. The upgrade fails because the application fails to shut down before the upgrade occurs.
Resolution Redeploy the Application Pattern Type for Java Version 1.0.0.4.

The WebSphere Application Server hypervisor image capture process hangs on "Performing the reset command on the virtual system" step
Problem If 60 minutes has elapsed while capturing an image, after the initial image extend has completed, the image capture will hang.
Resolution Perform the image capture within 60 minutes, after extending the initial image.

IBM Image Construction and Composition Tool

Bundles are not added to new images
Problem If an installation step is not defined when creating an image from a template, the bundle is not added to the new image.
Resolution After you create an image from a template, add more bundles to that image by following the steps in the Adding software bundles to virtual images topic in the information center.

How to use the PowerVM cloud provider to import an image into IBM Workload Deployer
Problem If you are using the PowerVM cloud provider in the Image Construction and Composition Tool, the steps to import an image into IBM Workload Deployer are different than the steps documented in the information center.
Resolution To use the PowerVM cloud provider in Image Construction and Composition Tool to import your image into IBM Workload Deployer, complete the following steps:
  1. If you want to import a virtual machine, capture the virtual machine as a virtual appliance by using IBM Systems Director. If you want to import a virtual appliance, then skip this step and continue with step 2.
  2. Use the PowerVM cloud provider to import the virtual appliance. Extend the virtual machine without adding any bundles, except for the PowerVM enablement bundle that is automatically added by the Image Construction and Composition Tool during image extension. Then synchronize and capture the virtual machine, and export the OVA file.
  3. Import the OVA file into Workload Deployer.
  4. If you need to add any bundles or personalities to the image, do so by using the Workload Deployer cloud provider in Image Construction and Composition Tool.

Problems occur when deploying IBM WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition for PowerVM images with Image Construction and Composition Tool
Problem You might notice that your deployment process stops responding with incomplete configurations in the following cases:
  • You are extending a WebSphere Application Server Hypervisor Edition 8.0.0.5 (or higher) for a PowerVM image.
  • The image is extended by using Image Construction and Composition Tool.
  • The image is captured and deployed into a pattern.

This issue is a current limitation for IBM WebSphere Application Server PowerVM images only.
Resolution You can use the Workload Deployer console to successfully clone and extend images.
