Abstract

IBM i2 Analyst's Notebook Premium Release Notes

Content

IBM® i2® Analyst's Notebook® Premium 8.9.7 is available.

Description

Analyst's Notebook Premium 8.9.7 builds on the capabilities of Analyst's Notebook, providing single users a local Analysis Repository. Analyst's Notebook Premium collects, manages, and organizes information and intelligence. Data in the repository can be viewed and edited, without needing to put the content into a chart first. Using the Analysis Repository, it is easy to uncover relationships, pathways, and networks across data types. Adding Analyst's Notebook Premium to the IBM i2 Intelligence Analysis Platform provides extensive multidimensional analysis tools for use in a collaborative environment.

Important: IBM i2 Intelligence Analysis software at version 8.9 is not compatible with earlier versions of i2 software. Upgrading directly is not supported. To install IBM i2 software at version 8.9, you must first uninstall all of your existing i2 software, and then install the new versions.

Announcement

The Analyst's Notebook Premium 8.9.7 announcement is available at http://www.ibm.com/common/ssi/index.wss. See the announcement for the following information:

  • Detailed product description, including a description of new functionality
  • Product-positioning statement
  • Packaging and ordering details
  • International compatibility information

Release highlights

Analyst's Notebook Premium 8.9.7 includes the following new functionality and key enhancements:

  • The Activity View visualizes temporal chart data, to help you to identify significant overlaps and anomalies in event timelines. The occurrence and duration of events are plotted on a ‘Gant-style’ visualization. To pinpoint areas for further data gathering, you can identify time periods that have no information.
  • Additional human led visual querying capabilities that support the investigative and strategic analysis of data. You can draw queries to find single entities, or to find complex networks that contain indirect relationships. You can add conditions to hone query results, and save and share query definitions.
  • Preservation of data provenance information. This enhancement enables you to see where the items you are working with originated from, and enables Analyst's Notebook Premium to retrieve further information from the source system, such as information about connected items.
  • Chart Item Uploader enables you to leverage the existing intelligence that is held within Analyst's Notebook charts. The Chart Item Uploader ingests Analyst's Notebook chart data into the Analysis Repository. You can collect detailed intelligence on individuals or events that would otherwise remain hidden in several different charts.
  • Ability to edit charting schemes. You can configure how entities and links within the Analysis Repository are represented on an Analyst's Notebook charting surface.
  • Ability to merge duplicate entities, to present a single unified view of all information about an entity. Your analysis of entities on an Analyst's Notebook charting surface might suggest that two or more entities represent the same real world item. You can merge entity visualizations on the chart to test hypotheses about whether they are duplicates, then if your hypotheses are proved you can merge the entity data in the Analysis Repository. A single entity consolidates the duplicate entities and retains their data provenance information.
  • Enhanced Infotips provide access to Analysis Repository actions such as filtered expand, add to set, and quick search. This enhancement provides a more intuitive and efficient workflow.
  • The language selector enables you to change the user interface language at any time.
  • Improved selection state provides clearer context of the entities and links that are selected on the charting surface.

Backup strategy

It is important to have a robust backup and recovery strategy in place for the local Analysis Repository. Ideally, you should use your existing corporate backup solution, or schedule manual backups on a regular basis.

To back up the local Analysis Repository completely, you must back up the repository folder in the user's profile. By default, the repository folder is %LOCALAPPDATA%\IBM i2\Local Analysis Repository.

For maximum reliability, ensure that Analyst's Notebook Premium is not running when backing up.

Known problems

The most up-to-date source for known problems in Analyst's Notebook Premium is the online version of these release notes at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27027028.

At time of publication, the following problems were known:

Attempting to view the combined properties of different types of Event Frames causes Analyst's Notebook to crash
Selecting the Type page of the Edit window can cause Analyst's Notebook to unexpectedly close when you edit combined properties of different entity types. This applies to the following representation Types: Event Frame, Box, Circle, and Text Block.
Visual query is disabled on Windows XP
If you use Windows XP, you cannot use the visual query feature. To use visual query, upgrade to Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, and install Internet Explorer 9 or later.
Extra translations are available for part of the user interface
If you select Arabic, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Slovak, or Turkish in the language selector tool, much of the Analyst's Notebook user interface is translated. These translations are partial and some parts of the application are in English, for example the content of the Data Sources task pane.
Some user names and folder names prevent connection to the local Analysis Repository
If your Windows user name or the name of your folder within C:\Users contains non-ASCII characters, then Analyst's Notebook Premium cannot connect to your local Analysis Repository. If you start Analyst's Notebook Premium, select a schema, then click OK, the following error message is displayed: Error connecting to the Analysis Repository.
Connection issues
If the local Analysis Repository entry appears in the Data Sources panel but does not connect automatically, close and restart Analyst's Notebook Premium.
Performance enhancements
In order to improve the performance of the local Analysis Repository, ensure that any virus checking software that you have installed does not monitor the Local Analysis Repository folder: %LOCALAPPDATA%\IBM i2\Local Analysis Repository.
Default location for local chart storage is incorrect in some instances
When you work with an Analyst's Notebook chart that uses iBase records or ESRI® mapping, you might see the full file path to the temporary chart store when you save or close the chart.
Analyst's Notebook Premium applications can operate incorrectly because of client security settings
Client security settings might prevent the correct operation of Analyst's Notebook Premium. This can occur if Internet Explorer, your security software, or the Java™ runtime software block necessary connections. When you use Analyst's Notebook Premium, these applications might request confirmation that the connections that Analyst's Notebook Premium makes are safe.
Import performance
At this release, the Analysis Repository Importer performs extra validation on the data that is imported into the repository. Due to this, you might find that the performance of importing complex data into the repository is reduced.
Restriction on the amount of information that is stored in an item
If your Analysis Repository contains items that have a large number of cards, or a large number of properties on each card:
  • Performance might be affected
  • Information can be harder to find

For data producing more than a hundred properties on a single card, or hundreds of cards on a single item, consider changing the structure of your data.

Custom schemas require custom charting schemes
To be available for use in Analyst's Notebook Premium, all schemas require companion charting schemes.
If you customize one of the supplied schemas, the changes that you make might not chart correctly unless you also customize the supplied charting scheme. If you create a custom schema, you must also create a charting scheme and store it in the same location as the schema.
For further information about editing and creating charting schemes, contact IBM Support.
Supported search types
There are some limitations with exact and fuzzy matching in non-English language regions:

Western European Script (French, German, Italian, Brazilian, Spanish) and Cyrillic (Russian) scripts– Exact matching produces successful results. Spelled like and matches based on synonyms can return less useful results, the degree of matching should be evaluated by the user. If the results for spelled like and synonym matching behaviors are less than favorable, they can be configured through IBM Services. Contact IBM Support for more information.

East Asian Scripts (Chinese (Traditional and Simplified), Korean, Japanese) – Exact matching produces mixed results. The indexing process is heavily reliant on word boundaries (for example, a space). As these scripts do not reflect the same word boundaries as western scripts, the exact matching can provide weak or no results for text fragments. Exact matching works however in whole character sequences for example, the equivalent to English sentences. Spelled like does not return usable results. Matches based on synonyms can return less useful results than English. If the results for synonym matching behaviors are less than favorable, they can be configured through IBM Services. Contact IBM Support for more information.

Exact match Spelled like Synonyms
English Good Good Good
Western European and Cyrillic Scripts Good Configurable Configurable
East Asian Scripts Mixed No Configurable
