System requirements

For information about hardware and software compatibility, see the detailed system requirements at http://www.ibm.com/software/reports/compatibility/clarity-reports/report/html/softwareReqsForProduct?deliverableId=78347D803B0511E6B85EC53D03B14E5E.

Analyst's Notebook Premium connectors

Analyst's Notebook Premium 9.0.4 is supplied with two connectors:
  • The Enterprise Insight Analysis connector enables connection to the Information Store.
  • The Analysis Repository connector enables connection to an i2 Analyze Analysis Repository and external data sources through Data Access on Demand (DAOD).

The two connectors can co-exist and you can log in through either or both of these connectors. However, interoperability is not possible. For example, if you chart an item from the Analysis Repository you cannot then expand that item through the Enterprise Insight Analysis connector. In the same way, if the same item is charted through both connectors, they are not automatically merged. You must manually identify potential matches or use Find Matching Entities, then merge the items. The resulting chart item has multiple database keys.

For a new installation, by default only the new Enterprise Insight Analysis connector is installed.

When you upgrade an existing i2 Analyze installation, only the Analysis Repository connector is upgraded. To install and use the Enterprise Insight Analysis connector, do one of the following after you upgrade:
  • Rerun the installation manager and change the installation settings.
  • Run the Enterprise Insight Analysis connector installer separately.

Installing Analyst's Notebook Premium 9.0.4

To install Analyst's Notebook Premium:
  1. Extract the product files from your downloaded distribution.
  2. Navigate in Windows Explorer to the location of the extracted files and run setup.exe. IBM Installation Manager opens.
  3. To start the installation steps, in the left menu, click Install.

Upgrading to Analyst's Notebook Premium 9.0.4

You cannot upgrade directly from Analyst's Notebook Premium version 8.9.1. You must install one of the following intermediate versions of Analyst's Notebook Premium before you can use the Installation Manager to upgrade from version 8.9.1 to version 9.0.4: version 8.9.3, 8.9.5, 8.9.7, 8.9.9, 8.9.11, 8.9.13, or 9.0.0.

To preserve the data that is stored within Analyst's Notebook Premium, after you run setup.exe, an upgrade wizard runs when you next open the application.

This wizard guides you through the following upgrade steps:
  1. Backing up data
  2. Adding a default time zone to existing date and time properties. This step occurs only when you upgrade from Analyst's Notebook Premium 8.9.1.

Backup strategy

It is important to have a robust backup and recovery strategy in place for the local Analysis Repository. Ideally, you use your existing corporate backup solution, or schedule manual backups regularly.

To back up the local Analysis Repository completely, you must back up the repository folder in the user's profile. By default, the repository folder is %LOCALAPPDATA%\IBM i2\Local Analysis Repository.

For maximum reliability, ensure that Analyst's Notebook Premium is not running when you are backing up.

Known problems

The most up-to-date source for known problems in Analyst's Notebook Premium is the online version of these release notes at http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27027028.

At time of publication, the following problems were known:

You cannot install Analysis Repository Connector by using setup.exe, if Analyst's Notebook is not installed
If Analyst's Notebook is not installed, and you attempt to install Analysis Repository Connector version 9.0.4 by using setup.exe you are prompted to install Analyst's Notebook 9.0.4. To avoid this problem, install Analyst's Notebook 9.0.4 and then install the Connector. You can also install both of the products by using the provided Installation Manager.
An error message is displayed if connected to a global Analysis Repository and you drag items from a DA source palette to a chart
DA sources are read-only, if you try to drag items from these palettes an error message is displayed. You must use the Analysis Repository palette or Data Sources pane to create items in an Analysis Repository.
Chart names are ignored when charts are created in the Analysis Repository
If you create a chart in the Analysis Repository, then save it and open it in Analyst's Notebook, the chart opens but the chart name is ignored. The default chart name is used. When any changes are made to that chart, the chart is treated as a standard Analyst's Notebook chart and the changes are not automatically saved back into the Analysis Repository. When you close and reopen Analyst's Notebook, a message might be displayed indicating that a temporary chart cannot be found. To avoid this problem, create your chart in Analyst's Notebook and upload it to the Analysis Repository. When you next Save the chart, any changes you made to it are automatically saved back into the Analysis Repository.
On Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, Analyst's Notebook fails to open correctly when you double-click a chart
To open your charts on Windows 10 Anniversary Edition, start Analyst's Notebook and use the File menu to open your charts.
Ribbon buttons do not always display correctly on a small monitor when you are using Analyst's Notebook in a language other than English
When you are using Analyst's Notebook in a language other than English on a monitor that has a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024, the ribbon button names might be clipped. This clipping might occur if the translated name is longer than the English name.
All open Analyst's Notebook charts are marked as modified when Page Setup is accessed
When you open the Page Setup window in an Analyst's Notebook chart, the chart is correctly marked as modified but all other open charts are also marked as modified.
New custom icons that have a shading color set are not saved in the chart
When you create a new custom icon and set a shading color, it is not saved as part of the chart. If you remove the image file from the custom icons folder or open the chart on a different computer, the icon is displayed as a circle.
Analyst's Notebook might not respond when the Links Between Selected Entities feature is used on a large chart
Analyst's Notebook might become unresponsive if the Links Between Selected Entities feature is used on a large chart. If this problem occurs, close Analyst's Notebook and restart it.
iBase fails to start Analyst's Notebook if Analyst's Notebook Connector for Esri is installed
If Analyst's Notebook Connector for Esri is installed, iBase cannot start Analyst's Notebook. Start Analyst's Notebook independently to work with iBase.
The Product Access Management console does not display correctly
On Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, options within the Product Access Management console do not display correctly if the Windows font size is not set to 100%. To avoid this problem, set the Windows font size to 100%.
Information in the Product Access Management console is displayed in an incorrect language
If the Product Access Management console was the subject of an administrative installation, then changing the application language can fail to change the display language. To avoid this issue on a multilingual system, install directly from the installation media.
16-bit JPEG images cannot be pasted from the clipboard
When the user copies and pastes images from Internet Explorer into a chart item, and you have “minimum” graphics capabilities (16-bit color depth), the item disappears from view. The item is not shown in the Chart Overview window.
An entity types icon is not shown after you delete a picture from an event frame
Deleting a picture from an event frame does not revert to showing the entity types icon. To show the entity types icon, right-click Display > Type Icon, or select Type Icon on the Display page of the Edit Event Frame window.
Delay in loading the Select Entity Type window
When you select All Entity Types from the drop-down list in the Insert from Palette task pane for the first time, the Select Entity Type window might not load immediately.
Icons in the legend might be incorrect if the chart is saved in Analyst's Notebook 7
Icons in the legend of charts that are created in Analyst's Notebook 8 or later might not be shown correctly if they are saved in Analyst's Notebook 7. This problem occurs if the icons that are used in the legend did not exist in Analyst's Notebook 7. Icons that are used in the chart itself are shown correctly.
Displaying OLE objects
Analyst's Notebook can display .bmp, .jpeg, and .gif OLE objects without the requirement for a third-party OLE server. However, the following limitations apply:
  • When you drag files from Internet Explorer, an Unexpected file format error message might be displayed.
  • When you drag an unrecognized file type onto the chart the error message Unexpected file format is displayed, and subsequent drag operations to the chart from Windows Explorer might fail.
To avoid these problems, select the Home tab, and then, in the Insert Entities group, insert the image by selecting OLE Object > Picture. Use the Edit Item Properties window to add a picture to an entity representation.
Performance problems when you disconnect from the network
When you disconnect from the network, but a network printer remains set as the default printer, switching between tabs in Analyst's Notebook can take several seconds. When you disconnect from a network, change the default printer to a local printer. Then, in Analyst's Notebook select a local printer.
The following registry key value causes Analyst's Notebook to ignore the user selected printer, and can be deleted: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\i2\Default\Printer.
Potentially unable to save entire charts when you Save as Picture
If your computer has insufficient memory, you might be unable to save large charts when you select File > Save as > Save Entire Chart as Picture. To avoid this problem, save the chart in sections by selecting File > Save As > Save Current View as Picture, or save the chart in PDF format by selecting File > Print > Print to PDF.
Untranslated system attribute names are displayed when you search for attribute classes
In a non-English version of Analyst's Notebook, when you search for attribute classes in the Insert from Palette task pane, the names of system attributes are not displayed in the translated form.
Unable to expand items after their data records are purged
If you purge data records from items that are added to the chart from data sources, any attempts to expand these items results with an error.
Colors window is not translated
The Colors window always contains US English text, regardless of the user's settings.
In Arabic and Hebrew, black and white application windows might appear when you use the Copy to New Association Chart feature
When you run in Arabic or Hebrew, selecting the Copy to New Association Chart feature might result in a black and then white application window, when the layouts are applied. A "Windows not responding" message might also appear. However, Analyst's Notebook then recovers and continues normally.
Inconsistent translation for parts of the user interface
The different components within Analyst's Notebook Premium support different languages. If no translated strings are available for a component, the default US English is displayed.
Some user names and folder names prevent connection to the Analysis Repository
If your Windows user name or the name of your folder within C:\Users contains non-ASCII characters, then Analyst's Notebook Premium cannot connect to the Analysis Repository.
When you start Analyst's Notebook Premium, select a schema, and then click OK, the following error message is displayed: Error connecting to the Analysis Repository.
Analyst's Notebook Premium might not connect to the local Analysis Repository automatically
The local Analysis Repository entry might appear in the Data Sources task pane, but Analyst's Notebook Premium might not connect to it automatically.
To correct the problem, close and restart Analyst's Notebook Premium.
Anti-virus software can affect performance
To improve the performance of the local Analysis Repository, ensure that anti-virus check software that is installed does not monitor the Local Analysis Repository folder: %LOCALAPPDATA%\IBM i2\Local Analysis Repository.
Analyst's Notebook Premium applications can operate incorrectly because of client security settings
Client security settings might prevent the correct operation of Analyst's Notebook Premium. When you use Analyst's Notebook Premium, applications might request confirmation that the connections are safe.
Restriction on the amount of information that is stored in an item
If the Analysis Repository contains items that have many cards, or many properties on each card:
  • Performance might be affected
  • Information can be harder to find

For data that produces more than a hundred properties on a single card, or hundreds of cards on a single item, consider changing the structure of the data.

Supported search types vary in non-English-language regions
There are some limitations with exact and fuzzy matching in non-English-language regions:
  • Western European script (Brazilian, French, German, Italian, Spanish) and Cyrillic scripts (Russian):

Exact matching produces successful results. Matches that are based on synonyms or similar spellings might return less useful results. Evaluate the results for similar spelling and synonym matching behaviors, and if necessary, you can modify the search configuration for a language during deployment.

  • East Asian scripts (Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese):

Exact matching produces mixed results. The indexing process is heavily reliant on word boundaries (for example, a space). As these scripts do not reflect the same word boundaries as western scripts, exact matching can provide weak or no results for text fragments. However, exact matching works in whole character sequences, such as the equivalent to English sentences. Matches based on synonyms can return less useful results than in English. You can modify the search configuration for a language during deployment.

  Exact match Spelled Like Synonyms
English Good Good Good
Western European and Cyrillic scripts Good Configurable Configurable
East Asian scripts Mixed No Configurable
Help window does not always appear when opened from the Data Sources task pane
When the Data Sources task pane is docked, and you click the Help button, the Help window might disappear and reappear when you click it. To close the Help window, undock the Data Sources task pane first. After you close the Help window, you cannot invoke it again from the Data Sources task pane when the task pane is undocked.
To avoid these problems, open the Help from the Data Sources area of the Home tab of the ribbon. The Help window opens with the "Working with Analyst's Notebook Premium" topic open.
Log in prompt appears in a single sign on environment
Despite logging in once already using single sign on, in some situations, users are prompted to log in again. When the credentials are verified, Analyst's Notebook Premium continues to work as designed.
This issue affects only Analyst's Notebook Premium if it is connected to a group Analysis Repository.
Analyst's Notebook 9.0 prevents installation of IBM i2 iBridge and IBM i2 Analyst's Notebook Connector for Esri through IBM Installation Manager
If Analyst's Notebook 9.0 is already installed, you cannot use IBM Installation Manager to install iBridge or Analyst's Notebook Connector for Esri. Installation Manager does not detect the presence of Analyst's Notebook 9.0, and the Next button to proceed with the installation is disabled.
To install these products in this situation, use their MSI installers instead of the Installation Manager.

Analyst's Notebook Premium is supported on hardware virtualization environments that run any of the operating systems that are listed in the detailed system requirements. When you run in a virtual environment, any issues that can be replicated by IBM in a supported operating system are addressed by using the standard IBM support policy.

Virtualization support

Analyst's Notebook Premium is supported on hardware virtualization environments that run any of the operating systems that are listed in the detailed system requirements. When you run in a virtual environment, any issues that can be replicated by IBM in a supported operating system are addressed by using the standard IBM support policy.

List item view displays a value of 'Text' for empty attributes
In the list item view, empty text attributes appear to contain the value 'Text'.
When you copy and paste images from Internet Explorer into a chart item, and you have “minimum” graphics capabilities (16-bit color depth), the item disappears from view.

Exact matching works, however, in whole character sequences, such as the equivalent to English sentences.

When the Data Sources task pane is docked, and you click on the Help button, the Help window might disappear and reappear when you click on it. To close the Help window, undock the Data Sources task pane first. After you close the Help window, you cannot invoke it again from the Data Sources task pane when the task pane is undocked.
To avoid these problems, open the Help from the Data Sources area of the Home tab of the ribbon. The Help window will open with the, "Working with Analyst's Notebook Premium" topic open.

To install these products in this situation, use their MSI installers instead of Installation Manager.
