I. Installing the Rational product

  • You cannot use the Packaging Utility to install Installation Manager. You must have Installation Manager installed on the local machine to use a repository created by Packaging Utility.
  • You can use Packaging Utility to add the Installation Manager fix pack to a repository. The Installation Manager fix pack is different than the Installation Manager installer package. Installation Manager versions are released as both a fix pack and an installer package.
    Example:

You go to the Installation Manager version 1.3.0 in download document 4022098.

The fix pack file for Installation Manager 1.3 is com.ibm.cic.agent.offering.zip. The fix pack contains files for all supported platforms. You can add the Installation Manager fix pack, com.ibm.cic.agent.offering.zip, to a repository created with Packaging Utility. The fix pack allows you to upgrade Installation Manager.

The installer package for Installation Manager 1.3 is agent.installer.<platform>.zip. The installer package contains files for only one platform. Do not add the installer package, agent.installer.<platform>.zip, to a repository created with Packaging Utility. When you add the installer package to the repository, the copy process fails.

    1. Download the Rational product from IBM Passport Advantage or IBM Software Group OEM Portal.

    2. Download the IBM Rational Enterprise Deployment v7.1 platform installation files from IBM Passport Advantage or IBM Software Group OEM Portal.  The Rational Enterprise Deployment files are a part of the same eAssembly as the Rational product.

The Rational Enterprise Deployment v7.1 platform files contain Packaging Utility and Installation Manager.  A version of Installation Manager is also included with the Rational product. In some cases, the version of Installation Manager from the Rational Enterprise Deployment files is different than the version of Installation Manager included with the Rational product.

Note: Installation Manager is backwards compatible.  Later versions of Installation Manager can install Rational products that are shipped with earlier versions of Installation Manager.

When Installation Manager is installed on a machine, it automatically checks for newer versions of Installation Manager. When the product you are installing requires a newer version of Installation Manager, you must update Installation Manager.  When the version of the installed Installation Manager is newer than the Installation Manager version included with the Rational product, Installation Manager remains at the current version.

Starting with Installation Manager version 1.3, you can set the preference Search for Installation Manager updates. When this preference is checked, Installation Manager searches for updates to itself. When the preference is not checked and the Rational product requires a newer version of Installation Manager, you are prompted to update Installation Manager. To set this preference in Installation Manager, go to the menu option File > Preferences > Updates

Use the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates to search the service repositories for updates to installed packages. To set the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates, go to the menu option File > Preferences > Repositories

Service repositories are repositories located at IBM.com. These repositories contain product updates. Each Rational product includes links to service repositories that are specific to the product. You cannot see or modify the service repository links. When the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates is checked, Installation Manager accesses IBM.com and searches for available updates for installed products.

Important: If a machine does not have access to IBM.com or you do not want the machine to access IBM.com, uncheck Search service repositories during installation and updates. When this option is checked, the Install, Update, and Modify wizards try to access the service repositories. If a connection is not made, Installation Manager times out and then retries to connect before starting the installation, update or modify.

When updates are available from the service repositories and you have checked Search service repositories during installation and updates, you will not see the updates from the service repositories listed in the repository table. To view the repository table, go to the menu option File > Preference > Repositories. When you click Install, Update or Modify, any updates found by Installation Manager will be displayed.

      Example:

Installation Manager and Rational ClearCase 7.1 are installed. You go to the menu option File > Preferences > Repository and check the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates. You click OK to close the Preferences window. Next, you click Update. You select the package containing Rational ClearCase to update then click Next. The default package name for Rational ClearCase is IBM Rational SDLC. Installation Manager displays the latest fix pack for Rational ClearCase for you to install. You see a green check mark in the Recommended column and IBM in the Vendor column. Click Next to continue the Update process.

How does Search for Installation Manager updates work with the Search service repositories during installation and updates? Search service repositories during installation and updates checks the service repositories for updates for installed products. Search for Installation Manager updates checks for available updates to Installation Manager. An update is available if it can be found by Installation Manager. Installation Manager finds updates either in the service repositories or in the repository table.

      Examples:

Note: These examples assume that Installation Manager v1.3.0 is installed and update 1.3.1 for Installation Manager is available.

      A. Search service repositories during installation and updates is checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is checked

Installation Manager searches both the service repositories and the repositories listed in the repository table for updates. Installation Manager looks for available updates to itself. If updates are found in either the service repositories or in the repositories listed in the repository table, the update displays in the Install, Update or Modify windows.

      B. Search service repositories during installation and updates is checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is not checked

Installation Manager searches both the service repositories and the repositories listed in the repository table for updates. Installation Manager does not look for available updates to itself. The update for Installation Manager remains available since the service repositories were searched but the update is not listed as an option in the Install, Update or Modify windows.

      C. Search service repositories during installation and updates is not checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is checked

Installation Manager does not access IBM.com to look at the service repositories for updates. Installation Manager does look for available updates to itself. Installation Manager does search the repositories listed in the repository table for updates. Updates that you download and add to the repository table are displayed in the Update window.

      D. Search service repositories during installation and updates is not checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is not checked
Installation Manager does not access IBM.com to look at the service repositories for updates. Installation Manager does search the repositories listed in in the repository table for updates. Installation Manager does not look for available updates to itself. If you download an update for Installation Manager, unzip the update file to create the update repository, add the repository to the repository table, then click Update, the update does not display in the Update window. You might receive a message indicating that no updates are found for Installation Manager.
      Example:

Rational ClearCase 7.1 is included with Installation Manager 1.2.1. The Rational Enterprise Deployment files available from Passport Advantage contain Installation Manager 1.3.

The Rational Enterprise Deployment files are not updated with the release of fix packs.  Rational ClearCase 7.1.0.2 and Rational ClearQuest 7.1.0.2 require Installation Manager 1.3.1.

      3. Extract the installation files for the Rational product, Installation Manager and the Packaging Utility to a local machine. The extracted installation files contain the product repository.

Example directories on the local machine that contain the extracted installation files:
        Windows:
        C:\installation_files\Rational_product
        C:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD-platform\InstallationManager
        C:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD-platform\PackagingUtility
        Linux or UNIX systems:
        /installation_files/Rational_product
        /installation_files/EnterpriseCD-platform/InstallationManager
        /installation_files/EnterpriseCD-platform/PackagingUtility

      4. Locate the file agent.installer.platform-version.zip under the InstallationManager directory.  Unzip this file to the InstallationManager directory.

For information on unzipping files on different platforms, see the ClearCase Information Center topic Verifying and extracting electronic images or ClearQuest Information Center topic Verifying and extracting electronic images for your specific release.

You can determine the version of Installation Manager files by checking the config.ini file. You do not need to install Installation Manager to check the version. The config.ini file reports the version of Installation Manager included with the Rational Enterprise Deployment files and Rational products.

Note: The config.ini file might not be available with other downloads of Installation Manager.

For Installation Manager from the Rational Enterprise Deployment installation files:

      1. Go to:
        Windowsinstall_files\InstallationManager\configuration

        Linux or UNIX systems/install_files/InstallationManager/configuration

      2. Open the config.ini file

      3. Look for im.version=1.3.0

In this example, the Installation Manager version is 1.3.0.

      5. Locate the file pu.disk_platform-version.zip under the PackagingUtility directory.  Unzip this file to the PackagingUtility directory.

      6. Install Installation Manager and IBM Packaging Utility. Installation Manager is installed when you install Packaging Utility.

        Windows
        install_files\InstallationManager\install.exe
        install_files\PackagingUtility\disk_platform\InstallerImage_platform\install.exe

        Linux or UNIX systems
        /install_files/InstallationManager/install.exe
        /install_files/PackagingUtility/disk_platform/InstallerImage_platform/install

Important: On Windows, use install.exe for installations that use the GUI. Use installc.exe for silent installs. It is not supported to use install.exe for silent installs.

      Examples:

        Windows
        c:\installation_files\EnterpiseCD-platform\InstallationManager\install.exe
        c:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD-platform \PackagingUtility\disk_platform\InstallerImage_platform\install.exe

        Linux or UNIX systems:
        /installation_files/EnterpiseCD-platform/InstallationManager/install.exe /installation_files/EnterpriseCD-platform/PackagingUtility/disk_platform/InstallerImage_platform/install

II. Create the repository in Packaging Utility

      1. Check access to the HTTP server from the machine with Packaging Utility installed. Access includes FTP access or mapping a writable, shared drive to document directory on the HTTP server.

      2. Start the Packaging Utility.

      3. Click Copy Packages > Next.

      4. Click Open Repository.

      5. Click Browse and navigate to the directory containing the Rational product installation files.

        Windows: C:\installation_files\Rational_product\disk1\diskTag.inf

        Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/Rational_product/disk1/diskTag.inf

Note: If you have a repository that contains a diskTag.inf and a repository.config, you must select the diskTag.inf directory. When the repository.config directory is selected, the copy process fails.

After clicking Copy Packages, it states: "Download zips from IBM web site to hard drive. Unzip each into a common root directory."

On Open Repository, it states "You can open the repository.config file, a directory that contains the repository.config file, a .zip file, or a JAR file. For enterprise CD images, open the diskTag.inf file in the root of the CD."

Zip files that contain a diskTag.inf or are larger than 2.2 gigabytes in size must be unzipped. Both the Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest 7.1 installation files contain a diskTag.inf file.

      Difference between repository.config and diskTag.inf.

Repository.config is a file that can be created using the Packaging Utility or obtained from the installation files.  This file is usually in the install_files\RationalProduct directory.

diskTag.inf indicates to Installation Manager that the files are from a disk image.  diskTag.inf can be across multiple disks.  You cannot create a diskTag.inf with Packaging Utility but you can select a diskTag.inf in Packaging Utility. diskTag.inf cannot be used from a HTTP server. Fix packs do not contain a diskTag.inf

Note: This scenario does not use Launchpad. Launchpad is shipped only with disk images and uses only diskTag.inf.  Launchpad does not use repository.config

Optional: To enter a different repository name, uncheck the option Use the location as the name of the target repository. The default value for the repository name is the location of the selected repository.

Example of default value for Repository Name:

          Windows: C:\installation_files\Rational_product\disk1\diskTag.inf

          Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/Rational_product/disk1/diskTag.inf

      6. Click OK.

      7. On the Source screen, verify that the Rational product repository is selected.

Note: Expand the repository name to see what files are located in the repository

      8. Click Next > Accept License Agreement.

      9. Click Browse to select a directory on the HTTP server to create a new repository. You must select an existing directory.

      Example:
        Windows: \\HTTPServer\Rational_product

        Linux or UNIX systems: /HTTPServer/Rational_product

      10. Click Next.

      11. Click Copy. This step copies the selected repositories into a repository located on the HTTP server.

      Example:
        Windows:
Files in the Rational product repository, C:\installation_files\Rational_product\disk1\diskTag.inf, are copied to the repository on the HTTP server, \\HTTPServer\Rational_product.
        Linux or UNIX systems:
Files in the Rational product repository, installation_files/Rational_product/disk1/diskTag.inf, are copied to the repository on the HTTP server, /HTTPServer/Rational_product.

      12. Close Packaging Utility.

      13. Copy the Installation Manager files to the HTTP server.

      Example:
        Windows: \\HTTPServer\InstallationManager

        Linux or UNIX systems: /HTTPServer/InstallationManager

Reminder: You cannot add Installation Manager installation files to the repository created by the Packaging Utility. Installation Manager must be installed on the machine before accessing the repository created by Packaging Utility. You can add an Installation Manager fix pack, com.ibm.cic.agent.offering.zip, to the repository created by packaging Utility.
