Notes:

  • Recording a response file requires that Installation Manager be installed but only on one machine.

  • "Rational product" refers to Rational ClearCase or Rational ClearQuest unless otherwise specified.

  • "Local machine" refers to the machine where you install the Rational product.

  • "Admin machine" refers to a machine that you use to create the repository through the Package Utility.

  • "Network shared drive" refers to a location on the network that is accessible by the local machine.

  • Some of the steps have an Additional Information section. The Additional Information section provides additional details about the installation step. Click on the Additional Information link in order to expand this information.

I. Download the installation files

1. Download the Rational product from IBM Passport Advantage or IBM Software Group OEM Portal.

2. Download the IBM Rational Enterprise Deployment v7.1 platform installation files from IBM Passport Advantage or IBM Software Group OEM Portal. The Rational Enterprise Deployment files are a part of the same eAssembly as the Rational product.

3.  Extract the installation files for both the Rational product and Installation Manager to a network shared drive.

Example directories on the network shared drive that contain the extracted files:
    Windows;
    C:\installation_files\Rational_product
    C:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD- platform\InstallationManager

    Linux or UNIX systems:
    /installation_files/Rational_product
    /installation_files/EnterpriseCD- platform/InstallationManager

4. Locate the file agent.installer. platform-version.zip under the InstallationManager directory.  Unzip this file to the InstallationManager directory.

II. Record a response file

    Note:  Some versions of Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest do not ship with a default response file.  To obtain sample response files, see:
      Technote Title
      Weblink
      Sample response files for IBM Rational ClearCase 1351501

      Sample response files for IBM Rational ClearQuest 1348204

    1. Check user requirements for installing a Rational product. Rational Team products require administrator access. See these topics for your product and release:
    If the Rational product requires administrator access to run the installation, install Installation Manager using the administrator commands:
      Windows: install.exe

      Linux or UNIX systems: install

    Important: On Windows, it is not supported to use install.exe for silent installs. Use installc.exe for silent installs. Use install.exe for installations that are not silent.

    2.  Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to the admin machine.  Select a drive that is common to the machines that you are installing on.  The response file stores the drive and directory location for the repositories. For information on how to install Installation Manager using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.

    Example of a shared drive on the admin machine:  g:\installation_files

    ... where g:\ points to the shared drive from the network shared drive.

    3.  Install Installation Manager on the admin machine.  You use the Installation Manager GUI to record the response file.

    For platforms that do not have a GUI, see:

    Run the following command to install as an administrator:
      Windows: shared_drive:\ install_files\install.exe

      Linux or UNIX systems:   /install_files/install

    Important:  On Windows, it is not supported to use install.exe for silent installs. Use installc.exe for silent installs. Use install.exe for installations that are not silent.

    Example:
      Windows: g:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD- platform \InstallationManager/install.exe

      Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/EnterpriseCD- platform/InstallationManager/install

    4. After the Installation Manager installation completes, you are prompted to restart Installation Manager. Close Installation Manager after it restarts.

    5.  On the admin machine, open a command prompt to the Eclipse directory located under the installed Installation Manager directory:
      Windowsinstall_dir\Installation Manager\eclipse

      Linux or UNIX Systems/install_dir/InstallationManager/eclipse

    Examples using default directory locations:
      Windows: C:\Program Files\IBM\Installation Manager\eclipse

      Linux or UNIX Systems/opt/IBM/InstallationManager/eclipse

    6. Run the command to record a response file for the Rational product installation. Remember the name and location of the response file, as you will need this information in a later step.
      Windows: IBMIM –record <response file and path name> -skipInstall agentDataLocation

      Linux or UNIX systems: ./IBMIM –record <response file and path name> -skipInstall agentDataLocation
      ...where agentDataLocation is the directory location for storing the -skipInstall files and folders.

    Important:  On Windows, it is not supported to use the command IBMIM.exe for silent installs. Use IBMIMc.exe for silent installs. Use IBMIM.exe for installations that are not silent and when recording a response file.

    Example commands:
      Windows: IBMIM -record c:\response_file\install_clearcase71.xml -skipInstall c:\skipInstall_directory\install_clearcase71
      Linux or UNIX Systems: ./IBMIM –record /response_file/install_clearcase71.xml -skipInstall skipInstall_dir/install_clearcase71

      where install_clearcase71.xml is the response file being recorded and skipInstall_directory\install_clearcase71 is the location where the skipInstall folders and files are created.

    7.  While recording the response file, add the Rational product and Installation Manager repository locations.
      a.  Go to File > Preferences > Repositories

      b.  Add the repository locations for the Rational product installation files and for the Installation Manager installation files. The repository locations in this scenario are located on the network shared drive. The repository locations were created when you extracted the installation files for both the Rational product and Installation Manager. For information on installation Installation Manager using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.

      Windows:
      Rational Product: g:\installation_files\Rational_product\disk1\diskTag.inf
      Installation Manager: g:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD- platform\InstallationManager\repository.config

      where g: points to the shared drive from the network shared drive.

      Linux or UNIX Systems:
      Rational Product: /installation_files/Rational_product/disk1/diskTag.inf
      Installation Manager: /installation_files/EnterpriseCD- platform/InstallationManager/repository.config

      c.  Set preferences

      In the Preferences window, select Repositories. Enable or disable Search service repositories during installation and updates as appropriate for your environment. This option is stored as offering.service.repositories.areUsed in the response file.

      In the Preferences window, select Updates. Enable or disable Search for Installation Manager updates as appropriate for your environment.. This option is stored as com.ibm.cic.common.core.preferences.searchForUpdates in the response file.

      For information on silent install preferences, go to the Installation Manager Information Center topic Silent installation preference keys for your specific release.

      d.  Click OK

    8.  Step through the install, populating the fields as appropriate for your environment.

    9.  Once the install is finished, close Installation Manager to finish the recording of the response file.

    10. If you created the response file on the admin machine and not on the network shared drive, you must copy the response file to the network shared drive.  You do not need to copy the agentDataLocation directory to the remote server.

    Note: You might want to create a directory specific for response files on the network shared drive.

    Example:
      Windows: c:\installation_files\response_files

      Linux or UNIX Systems: /installation_files/response_files

    III. R un the silent install

    1. Go to the local machine where you want to install the Rational product.

    2.  Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to the local machine.

    Reminder:  Use the same drive letter for the mounted directory or shared drive that was used during the creation of the response file.  OR, manually edit the response file to change the drive letter as appropriate for the mounted directory or shared drive on the local machine.

    Example of repository location in a response file:
      Windows:
      <server>
           <repository location='g:\installation_files\Rational_Product' />
      </server>
      Linux or UNIX Systems:
      <server>
           <repository location='/installation_files/Rational_Product' />
      </server>

    3. Check user requirements for installing a Rational product. Rational Team products require administrator access. See these topics for your product:
    4. On the local machine, navigate to the Installation Manager directory located on the network shared drive that contains the extracted installation files:
      Windows: install_files\InstallationManager

      Linux or UNIX systems: /install_files/InstallationManager

      Example:
        Windows: g:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD- platform\InstallationManager

        ... where g:\  points to the shared drive from the network shared drive.

        Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files /InstallationManager

    5.  Run the silent install command for administrators to install the Rational product.  Use the response file you recorded as the value for the -input option.
      Windows: installc.exe --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input <response file path and name>

      Linux or UNIX systems: install --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input <response file path and name>

    Important:  On Windows, it is not supported to use install.exe for silent installs. Use installc.exe for silent installs. Use install.exe for installations that are not silent or when recording a response file.

    Note: For an example script that will install Installation Manager and a product using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.

    Example:
      Windows: g:\installation_files\EnterpriseCD- platform\InstallationManager\installc.exe --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input g:\installation_files\response_files\install_clearcase71.xml

      Linux or UNIX systems: ./installation_files/EnterpriseCD- platform/InstallationManager/install --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input root/installation_files/response_files/install_clearcase71.xml

    IV. Install the Rational product on additional machines

    1. Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to the local machine.

    2. Check user requirements for installing. Rational Team products require administrator access. See these topics for your product:
    3. On the local machine, navigate to the Installation Manager directory located on the network shared drive. The Installation Manager directory contains the extracted installation files:
      Windowsinstall_files\InstallationManager

      Linux or UNIX systems: /install_files/InstallationManager

    4. Run the silent install command for administrators to install the Rational product.
      Windows: installc.exe --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input <response file path and name>

      Linux or UNIX systems: ./install --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input <response file path and name>

    Important:  On Windows, it is not supported to use install.exe for silent installs. Use installc.exe for silent installs. Use install.exe for installations that are not silent.

    V. Installing a Rational product fix pack

    Note: The following steps assume that the local machine does not have access to IBM.com.

    1.  Download the fix pack from IBM.com including the fix pack for Installation Manager if a newer version is required.

    2.  Extract the fix pack installation files to a directory on the network shared drive.  The directory contains the fix pack repository.

    Example directory on the network shared drive:
      Windows:  C:\installation_files\fixpackCC7101

      Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/fixpackCC7101

    3.  Edit the response file:
      a. Add the fix pack repository location in the server command.

      Note: You might also need to add the repository location for the Installation Manager fix pack if one is required as well as adding the preference com.ibm.cic.common.core.preferences.searchForUpdates

      Example:
        Windows:
        Before adding repository location for the fix pack:

        <server>
             <repository location='g:\installation_files\Rational_Product' />
        </server>

        After adding repository location for the fix pack:

        <server>
             <repository location='g:\installation_files\Rational_Product' />
             <repository location='g:\installation_files\fixpackCC7101' />
        </server>

        where g:\ points to the shared drive.

        Linux or UNIX systems:
        Before adding repository location for the fix pack:

        <server>
             <repository location='/installation_files/Rational_Product' />
        </server>

        After adding repository location for the fix pack:

        <server>
             <repository location='/installation_files/Rational_Product' />
             <repository location='/installation_files/fixpackCC7101' />
        </server>

      b. Remove the version attribute from the offering key located in the install command.

      Example:
        Before deleting version attribute:

        <install>
             <offering profile='IBM Rational SDLC' id='com.ibm.rational.clearcase. platform ' version='7.1.0.00-7-1-D081110' features='com.ibm.rational.clearcase...... />
        </install>
          ...where version='7.1.0.00-7-1-D081110' is the value to be deleted.
        After deleting version attribute:

        <install>
             <offering profile='IBM Rational SDLC' id='com.ibm.rational.clearcase. platform ' features='com.ibm.rational.clearcase......./>
        </install>

      c. Save and close the response file.

    4. Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to a local machine.

    Reminder:  Use the same drive letter for the shared drive that was used during the creation of the response file.  Or manually edit the response file to change the drive letter as appropriate for the shared drive on the local machine. For information on how to install Installation Manager using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.

    5. On the local machine, open a command prompt to:
      Windows: install_files\InstallationManager

      Linux or UNIX systems: /install_files/InstallationManager

    6.  Run the command to install updates:
      Windows: installc.exe --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input <response file path and name>

      Linux or UNIX Systems: ./install --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input <response file path and name>

    Important:  On Windows, it is not supported to use install.exe for silent installs. Use installc.exe for silent installs. Use install.exe for installations that are not silent or when recording a response file.

    Example:
      Windows: installc.exe --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input g:\installation_files\response_files\install_clearcase71.xml

      Linux or UNIX systems: ./install --launcher.ini silent-install.ini -input /root/installation_files/response_files/install_clearcase71.xml

    Note: -updateAll checks available repositories for updates. The preferences com.ibm.cic.common.core.preferences.searchForUpdates and offering.service.repositories.areUsed affect the repositories that are available. You can add the -updateAll command in the response file.

    The Installation Manager Information Center contains the latest information on response file commands.  For more information, see the Response file commands topic for your specific release.
