I. Install the Rational product and Installation Manager

1. Download the Rational product from IBM Passport Advantage. The Rational product installation files include Installation Manager. You do not need to download Installation Manager separately.

This scenario does not use the silent install. For silent install scenarios, you would also download the IBM Rational Enterprise Deployment v7.1 platform installation files. The Rational Enterprise Deployment files are a part of the same eAssembly as the Rational product. For other installation scenarios, see technote 1390817.

Note: Installation Manager is backwards compatible.  Later versions of Installation Manager can install Rational products that are shipped with earlier versions of Installation Manager.

When Installation Manager is installed on a machine, it automatically checks for newer versions of Installation Manager. When the product you are installing requires a newer version of Installation Manager, you must update Installation Manager.  When the version of the installed Installation Manager is newer than the Installation Manager version included with the Rational product, Installation Manager remains at the current version.

Starting with Installation Manager version 1.3, you can set the preference Search for Installation Manager updates. When this preference is checked, Installation Manager searches for updates to itself. When the preference is not checked and the Rational product requires a newer version of Installation Manager, you are prompted to update Installation Manager. To set this preference in Installation Manager, go to the menu option File > Preferences > Updates

Use the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates to search the service repositories for updates to installed packages. To set the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates, go to the menu option File > Preferences > Repositories

Service repositories are repositories located at IBM.com. These repositories contain product updates. Each Rational product includes links to service repositories that are specific to the product. You cannot see or modify the service repository links. When the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates is checked, Installation Manager accesses IBM.com and searches for available updates for installed products.

Important: If a machine does not have access to IBM.com or you do not want the machine to access IBM.com, uncheck Search service repositories during installation and updates. When this option is checked, the Install, Update, and Modify wizards try to access the service repositories. If a connection is not made, Installation Manager times out and then retries to connect before starting the installation, update or modify.

When updates are available from the service repositories and you have checked Search service repositories during installation and updates, you will not see the updates from the service repositories listed in the repository table. To view the repository table, go to the menu option File > Preference > Repositories. When you click Install, Update or Modify, any updates found by Installation Manager will be displayed.

    Example:

Installation Manager and Rational ClearCase 7.1 are installed. You go to the menu option File > Preferences > Repository and check the preference Search service repositories during installation and updates. You click OK to close the Preferences window. Next, you click Update. You select the package containing Rational ClearCase to update then click Next. The default package name for Rational ClearCase is IBM Rational SDLC. Installation Manager displays the latest fix pack for Rational ClearCase for you to install. You see a green check mark in the Recommended column and IBM in the Vendor column. Click Next to continue the Update process.

How does Search for Installation Manager updates work with the Search service repositories during installation and updates? Search service repositories during installation and updates checks the service repositories for updates for installed products. Search for Installation Manager updates checks for available updates to Installation Manager. An update is available if it can be found by Installation Manager. Installation Manager finds updates either in the service repositories or in the repository table.

    Examples:

Note: These examples assume that Installation Manager v1.3.0 is installed and update 1.3.1 for Installation Manager is available.

    A. Search service repositories during installation and updates is checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is checked

Installation Manager searches both the service repositories and the repositories listed in the repository table for updates. Installation Manager looks for available updates to itself. If updates are found in either the service repositories or in the repositories listed in the repository table, the update displays in the Install, Update or Modify windows.

    B. Search service repositories during installation and updates is checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is not checked

Installation Manager searches both the service repositories and the repositories listed in the repository table for updates. Installation Manager does not look for available updates to itself. The update for Installation Manager remains available since the service repositories were searched but the update is not listed as an option in the Install, Update or Modify windows.

    C. Search service repositories during installation and updates is not checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is checked

Installation Manager does not access IBM.com to look at the service repositories for updates. Installation Manager does look for available updates to itself. Installation Manager does search the repositories listed in the repository table for updates. Updates that you download and add to the repository table are displayed in the Update window.

    D. Search service repositories during installation and updates is not checked, Search for Installation Manager updates is not checked

Installation Manager does not access IBM.com to look at the service repositories for updates. Installation Manager does search the repositories listed in in the repository table for updates. Installation Manager does not look for available updates to itself. If you download an update for Installation Manager, unzip the update file to create the update repository, add the repository to the repository table, then click Update, the update does not display in the Update window. You might receive a message indicating that no updates are found for Installation Manager.
Example:

Rational ClearCase 7.1 is included with Installation Manager 1.2.1. The Rational Enterprise Deployment files available from Passport Advantage contain Installation Manager 1.3.

The Rational Enterprise Deployment files are not updated with the release of fix packs.  Rational ClearCase 7.1.0.2 and Rational ClearQuest 7.1.0.2 require Installation Manager 1.3.1.

2. Extract the installation files for the Rational product to a network shared drive. Verify the directories containing the installation files are shared directories.

Example directories on the network shared drive that contain the extracted files:
    Windows: C:\installation_files\Rational_product

    Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/Rational_product

You can determine the version of Installation Manager files by checking the config.ini file. You do not need to install Installation Manager to check the version.

Note: the config.ini file might not be available with other downloads of Installation Manager.

To determine the Installation Manager version:

    1. Go to:
      Windowsinstall_files\disk1\InstallerImage_win32\configuration

      Linux or UNIX systems/install_files/disk1/InstallerImage_platform/configuration

    2. Open the config.ini file

    3. Look for im.version=1.2.1

In this example, the Installation Manager version is 1.2.1.

3. Check user requirements for installing a Rational product. Rational Team products require administrator access. See these topics for your product:
4. Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to the local machine. For information on how to install Installation Manager using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.

Example of a shared drive on the local machine:  g:\installation_files

... where g:\ points to the mapped shared drive from the network shared drive.

5. Install the Rational product and Installation Manager.

6. Go through the installation wizard and enter configuration information during the installation.

For machines that have Installation Manager installed, Installation Manager is updated when the Rational product being installed requires a later version of Installation Manager.

Example: You install a Rational product that includes Installation Manger version 1.3. If Installation Manager 1.2.1 is installed on the local machine then Installation Manager is updated to version 1.3.

Note: An issue exists when upgrading Installation Manager from 1.3 to 1.3.1. See technote 1391503 for more information.

II. Install the Rational product and Installation Manager on additional machines

To install the Rational product and Installation Manager on additional machines in the same environment:

1. Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to the local machine. For information on how to install Installation Manager using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.

2. Install the Rational product and Installation Manager:
    a. On the local machine, open a command prompt

    b. Go to the disk1 directory located on the network shared drive.

    Example:
      Windows: g:\installation_files\Rational_product\disk1

      Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/Rational_product/disk1

    c. Start Launchpad:
      Windows: launchpad.exe

      Linux or UNIX systems: launchpad.sh
Reminder: You must have a browser installed on the local machine to use Launchpad.

3. Enter configuration information during the installation.

III. Installing a Rational product fix pack

Note: For Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest, you do not need to install each fix pack. Instead, you can install only the latest fix pack. You do need a connection to the Rational ClearCase v7.1 or Rational ClearQuest v7.1 repository when installing a fix pack.

Example: Fix packs 7.1.0.1 and 7.1.0.2 are available for Rational ClearCase on Windows. You install 7.1.0.2. You do not need to install 7.1.0.1.

For machines that have access to IBM.com and have the preferences Search for Installation Manager updates and Search service repositories during installation and updates checked, you can click Install, Update or Modify. Installation Manager searches for available updates in the service repositories. The Install, Update or Modify windows display available updates that you can select to install. You do not need to download the updates for the Rational product and Installation Manager.

Note: These steps assume that the machine you are installing on does not have access to IBM.com.

1.  Download the fix pack from IBM.com (this might also require downloading a fix pack for a later version of Installation Manager

2.  Extract the fix pack installation files to a directory on the network shared drive.  The directory contains the fix pack repository.

Example directory on the network shared drive
    Windows:  C:\installation_files\fixpackCC7101

    Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/fixpackCC7101

3. Mount a directory or map a shared drive from the network shared drive to a local machine. For information on how to install Installation Manager using a UNC path, refer to technote 1453995.
Example of a shared drive on the local machine:  g:\installation_files

... where g:\ points to the mapped shared drive from the network shared drive.

4. Add the fix pack repository in Installation Manager
    a. Go to the menu option File > Preferences

    b. Click Add Repository...

    c. Click Browse... and select the repository.config file in the fix pack repository
    Example
      Windows:  g:\installation_files\fixpackCC7101\repository.config

      Linux or UNIX systems: /installation_files/fixpackCC7101/repository.config

    d. Click Open > Ok, Apply > Ok

5.  Start Installation Manager if it is not already started.

6. Click Update
Installation Manager searches for and displays updates for installed packages.

7. Select the update to install. Click Next.

Note: If the Rational product requires a later version of Installation Manager, a message will be displayed on the Update Packages page that a newer version of Installation Manager is required. Updates to Installation Manager are affected by the preferences Search for Installation Manager updates and Search service repositories during installation and updates. When Installation Manager is installed on a machine, it checks for newer versions of Installation Manager based on the preferences settings.

This message appears if you have downloaded the latest fixpack for Installation Manager and have Search for Installation Manager updates set to True:
A new version of IBM Installation Manager is available.  You must update Installation Manager before you can continue.  To update Installation Manager, click Yes.  To return to the Start page, click No.  Do you want to update the Installation Manager?

When you click No, you cannot continue with the update. To display the message again after clicking No, click Recheck Status located in the lower right hand corner.

After the update to Installation Manager finishes, you are prompted to restart Installation Manager.

8. If Installation Manager is updated, click Install after Installation Manager restarts

Starting with version 7.1.0.2 of Rational ClearCase and Rational ClearQuest, you might be prompted to shut down running services or processes. See technote 1385993 for more information. Stop processes and services for Rational products before updating.

9. If processes and servers were stopped, click Recheck Status in the lower right hand corner.

10. Proceed with the update.

After the update completes, you must restart the machine.
