Tivoli Field Guide - Distributing Microsoft Hotfixes Using IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager: Automatic Maintenance of Windows Systems
White paper
Abstract
This field guide describes how to customize the inventory component of ITCM to collect which Hotfixes that are installed in the enterprise environment. There are several ways of detecting what hotfixes are installed locally on a Windows system. You could use Windows Update manually, you could scan the registry for hotfix information or you could add signatures for significant files of each hotfix to the Inventory signature database. There are two alternative methods proposed in this paper: 1. Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) 2. Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. Both methods rely on information provided by functions or tools from Microsoft. As long as they deliver accurate data, the information in the inventory database will have the same status.
