Abstract
The Novell Storage Services (NSS) File System is the default file system on the Novell Open
Enterprise Server NetWare 6.5 operating system. This file system is also available on SUSE
Linux Open Enterprise Server (Linux OES) Release 9, Linux OES 2 on SLES 10 and above.
The Novell NSS file system has some characteristics that differ from most UNIX file systems, and
the Tivoli Storage Manager backup -archive client support for this file system has equivalent
differences. The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance on backing up and restoring the
Novell NSS file system with the Tivoli Storage Manager Backup -Archive client.

This paper is composed of two main sections:
1. A brief discussion on accessing the NSS file system as a native Linux file system.
2. A more detailed description of the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backup and recovery
procedures for the NSS file system.
