Tivoli Field Guide - The Tivoli Management Agent Upgrade Process: A Technical Look at the Internals
White paper
Abstract
This document aims to explain how the Tivoli Management Agent (TMA endpoint) Upgrade process works. This has been broken down into four distinct groupings.
Section 2 looks at the commands used to upgrade endpoints in 3.7.1 and 4.1, discussing the wadminep and weupgd commands. Section 3 looks at the details of the process, looking first at the process from the Tivoli Management Environment (TME) side, and then looking at the processes on the endpoint. These processes will be categorized as server and client side operations. A lot of the details in section 2 were taken from the white paper entitled “TMF Version 4.1 Endpoint Upgrade Process in Tivoli Environment.” This paper was written by IBM Tivoli Framework development. It seems appropriate that a Field Guide that is describing the process flow of an upgrade includes an explanation of the tools needed to accomplish this task. The white paper did an excellent job of offering this explanation, hence the decision to incorporate this information. It is hoped that this paper will help to resolve many of the issues and anomalies that may arise during mass upgrades of endpoints in large environments by offering a blue print of the process.
