Important:

License Metric Tool with disconnected scanners

Disconnected scans allow for discovering software and hardware inventory by running scripts that are provided in the disconnected scanner package. The scripts initiate software and capacity scans, and create a package with scan results that you later need to upload to the License Metric Tool server.

• License Metric Tool Lite
  In this approach, you use a technology of your choice to deploy disconnected scanners on the computers in your infrastructure and then transfer scan results to the License Metric Tool server. Typically, you would use an automation technology that is already implemented in your company. In this approach, it is your responsibility to ensure that scan results are regularly uploaded to the License Metric Tool server. This aspect is not subject to IBM support.
  Important: Using License Metric Tool Lite is pre-approved for environments with up to 500 endpoints. To request for an approval in case of larger environments, write to talk2sam@us.ibm.com. You will also get help with the environment setup if needed.
   
• License Metric Tool with Ansible
  In this approach, you use Ansible playbooks that are delivered with License Metric Tool to install the disconnected scanner and perform the required tasks on the monitored endpoints as well as transfer scan results to the License Metric Tool server.

 

Installation on Linux

To install License Metric Tool with disconnected scanners on Linux, use the All-in-One installer and choose the option that deploys the License Metric Tool server and the DB2 database on a single computer (you do not need to install BigFix in this scenario).

Alternatively, if you want to reuse an existing DB2 database, use the stand-alone installer for the License Metric Tool server. Use this installer also for upgrading the License Metric Tool server to the latest version as the All-in-One installer cannot be used for upgrades.

Installation on Windows

To install License Metric Tool on Windows, use separate installers for the License Metric Tool server, and an MS SQL database (MS SQL Express is also supported for environments with up to 500 endpoints). The All-in-One installer for Windows is not available.

Upgrading

Download installation packages from Passport Advantage. Then, follow the upgrade instructions. For more information, see: Upgrading components of License Metric Tool server.

Depending on the operating system on which the License Metric Tool server is installed, download one of the following installation packages.

You can install the server components on Windows or Linux. For each operating system, you can choose the most suitable distribution of the components. Depending on the environment size, you can install the components on one, two, or three computers.

Note: You can also have a mixed environment. For example, you can install the BigFix server on Windows and the License Metric Tool server on Linux. However, each operating system requires a different database. Installation on Linux requires DB2 database, and installation on Windows requires MSSQL database.

After you choose the optimal installation scenario, download the required installation packages from the Passport Advantage website. To choose the best scenario, refer to the tables below.

It is recommended to install License Metric Tool on Linux by using the All-in-One installer that simplifies the installation process and the initial configuration.
