Space requirements

• 7 GB (7,000 MB) of disk space to store the downloadable parts.
• 8 GB (8,000 MB) of disk space to store the unpacked product files.
• 8 GB (8,000 MB) of disk space to store the product and its files.

Note: The downloadable parts can be deleted after you unpack them.

Installation issues

Be aware of the following issues before installing the product:

• The Launchpad installer does not support installation from a network device. Launchpad must be downloaded and executed locally.
• JDK on AIX: Installation of the JDK on AIX might fail because of a defect in AIX. Please refer to this technote for details: IV12285: JAVA 6.0.1 and JAVA 7 fail to start on AIX 7.1 TL SP0 and SP1. A more detailed explanation of the AIX defect can be found in the following technote: Issues installing and using WebSphere Application Server V8, IBM HTTP Server V8 on AIX 7.1 TL 1.
• Solaris and AIX: Issues have been reported when extracting the Launchpad with the TAR command. It does not extract files with paths longer than 100 characters. Instead, use the GNU TAR. For AIX, see this information: AIX TAR command requirements.
• Linux and AIX: Prior to installing WebSphere Application Server on a "new" Linux or AIX machine, go into /etc/security and add the following limits to the limits.conf file:
  • * hard nofile 100000
  • * soft nofile 100000
  If you do not make this change before installing the the server, using the WAS Administration Console after installation might produce the following error:
  • SRVE0255E: A WebGroup/Virtual Host to handle /ibm/console/login.do has not been defined.
  The solution is to uninstall the server, set the limits in limits.conf, and then reinstall the server.

Downloading and assembling the product

1. Go to the Find Downloads and Media page on IBM Passport Advantage Online.
2. Sign in using your IBM ID.
3. Select Find by part number from the Download finder options.
4. Search for each downloadable file by part number (parts are listed below).
5. Download the files that you require. The product comes in TAR disk files that let you download only the parts that you want. Each disk includes the installation software Launchpad and Installation Manager. The disks are packaged as follows:
   • Disk 1: WebSphere Application Server

   • Disk 2: WebSphere eXtreme Scale, Business Rules Embedded, and Decision Server

   • Disk 3: Decision Center

6. Extract all the disk files to the same directory. For example:
   • c:\WODM8\disk1

   • c:\WODM8\disk2

   • c:\WODM8\disk3

   To avoid problems with the extraction, make sure that the path to the directory is short. For example, an optimal path is to the root of your hard disk: C:/ODM801.
7. Start Launchpad from any disk. The installer will find the other disks automatically.

Extracting TAR files with WinZip

The product files are delivered as compressed TAR files. You must extract the files into the same directory to install them.

If you use WinZip to extract the TAR files, deselect TAR file smart CR/LF conversion:

1. Open WinZip Classic.
2. Select Options > Configuration, and click the Miscellaneous tab.
3. Clear the TAR file smart CR/LF conversion check box.
4. Unzip and import the data.

Again, to avoid problems with the extraction of the TAR files, extract them to the same folder at the root of your hard drive.
