Downloadable files

Abstract

The ShowUNK/ItemDef tools allow you to examine the UNK for a specific database to help determine if you are reaching or approaching the 64K limit for the UNK in a Notes database.

Download Description

Important Note: The ShowUNK/ItemDef tools cited below are provided "as is", unsupported; any problems with these tools should not be reported back to Lotus since they are unsupported utilities. The ShowUNK/ItemDef tools allow you to examine the UNK for a specific database to help determine if you are reaching or approaching the 64K limit for the UNK in a Notes database. These tools will tell how close to the limit a database is, and help customers see how much room they have saved after deleting fields from design elements/documents and then compacting the database. Note: Even if the table size returned by the utility indicates a value below 64k, overhead during processing of the table adds to its size and can cause the noted error. For example, if a table size is indicated as 60k it could still surpass the 64k once the overhead is added. There are no specifics on the additional size that overhead will add.

Installation Instructions

There are different tools based on what Notes client version your are running (4.x, or 5.x and later). There is no tool for Notes 3.x. If you need to run the tool against a database on a server from a remote client, you must use the Itemdef tool with a Notes 5.x or later client. See the "Running from a 5.x/6.x/7.x Client" section below. Copy the appropriate tool for your Notes Client version to your Notes Program directory. For example, C:\Notes\ or wherever your Notes.exe is. RUNNING FROM A NOTES 5.x/6.x/7.x CLIENT Use Itemdef.exe - Runs on Win32 (Win95, Win98, WinNT), Win32 Alpha, or OS/2 - Can run against local or server based databases. For server use syntax "Itemdef Server!!Db.nsf" Type Itemdef with no parameters to see what the options are: Itemdef - Display item definition table information for Notes R5 and higher. usage: itemdef [options] options: -b brief, one line display -u display sorted by item number -n display sorted by item name -f display sorted by frequency of item usage in documents (very slow) includes only data notes -F display sorted by frequency of item usage in documents (very slow) includes data notes and most non-data notes -c when used with -f or -F, displays NoteID's of documents for items used by or fewer documents. Defaults to 5. Note: If using the -c option, you have to direct the output to a file. Here is the syntax: itemdef -F -c 5 c:\notes\data\file.nsf >c:\notes\data\file.txt ================================== RUNNING FROM A NOTES 4.X CLIENT Use ShowUNK.exe - Runs on Win32 (Win95, Win98, WinNT) - Run against only local databases (if you need to examine a database on a server, run the tool locally on the server or replicate/copy the database locally). Type ShowUNK with no parameters to see what the options are: Usage: ShowUNK [options] Options: -I Show Item names Here is some sample output when running it on an Iris Discussion Database (the same one found on the web). Sample Run C:\notes>showunk c:\notes\data\irisdisc.nsf ShowUNK Version 1.0 - Database: c:\notes\data\irisdisc.nsf Title: Iris Discussion UNKs: 99 UNK table size: 1821 bytes In this example, the UNK table size is only 1,821 bytes. Since the limit is 64,000 bytes, this database has plenty of room for additional fields. To list out the actual fields in the UNK, add the " -i" parameter to the end of the command like so: Syntax for listing UNK fieldnames C:\notes>showunk c:\notes\data\irisdisc.nsf -i
