Updating JRE for Rational Directory Administrator 6.0, 6.0.0.1 and 6.0.0.2

Question & Answer

Question

How to update the JRE used with Rational Directory Administrator 6.0, 6.0.0.1 and 6.0.0.2?

Cause

Rational Directory Administrator bundles an IBM SDK for Java™ JRE that is based on the Oracle™ Java™ Development Kit (JDK). IBM releases critical patch updates (CPU) based on Oracle's CPU updates, which contain security vulnerability fixes for the JRE.

Answer

Steps to update JRE on Windows Systems

1. Download the updated JRE package from the link that is provided in the Security Bulletin or from IBM Support website.

2. Extract the new JRE file to a folder.

An example of the folder location to extract the file: D:\setups\JAVA\8.0.m.n\ibm-java-jre-80-win-x86_64

3. Close all instances and folders of RDA 6.0.0.x version. The upgrade might fail if any instance is running.

4. Stop the RDA WebAppsServer:

     a. Open the command prompt and go to the WLP bin folder location:<RDA_6.0.0.x_ InstallationDirectory>\WebAppsServer\WLP_8.x\bin\

         Example: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Rational\ RDA_6.0.0.x\ WebAppsServer\WLP_8.x\bin

     b. Run the following command:

          server.bat stop

If you stop the server, you see either of the following messages:

Server defaultServer stopped or Server defaultServer is not running.

      c. Close the command prompt.

5. Open and edit the server.bat file in WLP bin folder.

6. Search for the following line in the file: set JAVA_HOME= <JRE_PATH>.

7. Replace the existing <JRE_PATH> with the new JRE Path:

     Example: set JAVA_HOME=D:\setups\JAVA\8.0.m.n\ibm-java-jre-80-win-x86_64

8. Save and close the server file.

9. Run the clean command and start the RDA WebAppsServer:

     a. Open the command prompt and go to WLP bin folder location:<RDA_6.0.0.x_ InstallationDirectory>\WebAppsServer\WLP_8.x\bin\

         Example: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Rational\ RDA_6.0.0.x\ WebAppsServer\WLP_8.x\bin

     b. Run the following command:

          server run --clean

          You see the following message:

The server defaultServer is ready to run a smarter planet.

Steps to update JRE on Linux Systems

1. Download the updated JRE package from the link that is provided in the Security Bulletin or from IBM Support website.

3. Close all the instances and directories of RDA 6.0.0.x version. If any instance is running, the upgrade might fail.

4. Stop the RDA WebAppsServer:

     a. Open the terminal and go to WLP bin directory location:   <RDA_6.0.0.x_InstallationDirectory>/WebAppsServer/WLP_8.x/bin/

          Example: cd /var/IBM/Rational/RDA_6.0.0.x/WebAppsServer/WLP_8.x/bin

     b. Run the following command:

         ./server stop

If you stop the server, you can see one of the following messages:

Server defaultServer stopped or Server defaultServer is not running.

     c. Close the terminal.

5. Open and edit the server file in WLP bin directory.

6. Search for the following line in the file: set JAVA_HOME= <JRE_PATH>

7. Replace the existing <JRE_PATH> with the new JRE Path:

     Example: set JAVA_HOME=/setups/Java/8.0.m.n/ibm-java-x86_64-80

8. Save and close the server file.

9. Run the clean command and start the RDA WebAppsServer:

     a. Open the terminal and go to the WLP bin directory location: <RDA_6.0.0.x_InstallationDirectory>/WebAppsServer/WLP_8.x/bin/

         Example:  cd /var/IBM/Rational/RDA_6.0.0.x/WebAppsServer/WLP_8.x/bin
