MDM startup sees an intermittent engine initialization failure running on WebSphere 8.5.5.12, Java v8.0 on multiple OS

Troubleshooting

Problem

MDM application sometimes fails to initialize on WAS 8.5.5.12 with Java 1.8.

Symptom

When the start-up fails, the WebSphere Application Server for MDM appears to be running, but "MDM-native", "MDM-web-services" and "MDM-web-services-virtual" apps are all down while "MDM-operational-server-EBA" is only partially started
(when viewing the statuses of the apps on WebSphere Integrated Solutions Console).
The following message is captured in SystemOut.log:
"...NoClassDefFoundError: com.ibm.websphere.models.extensions.helpers.impl.PMEEJBJarExtensionHelperImpl..."

Cause

Unknown

Environment

RHE, Ubuntu, AIX and Windows.

Resolving The Problem

As the issue is intermittent, it usually does not recur with another attempt to restart the WebSphere Application Server.
Also, the issue does not occur on WAS 8.5.5.12 with Java 1.7.

WAS has provided an Fix for WAS 8.5.5.12 for the corresponding APAR:
