IBM Spectrum Protect cloud object storage support

Technote (FAQ)

Question

What types of cloud object storage environments can I use for my cloud-container storage pool?

Tip: The product now known as IBM Spectrum Protect™ was named IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager in releases earlier than Version 7.1.3. To learn more about the rebranding transition, see technote 1963634 (http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21963634).

Answer

The following tables list the cloud object storage service providers and cloud object storage devices that are supported for cloud-container storage pools by IBM Spectrum Protect. As a general rule, cloud devices and service providers are supported on the same operating systems that the IBM Spectrum Protect server supports. For details, see IBM Spectrum Protect Supported Operating Systems. However, cloud-container storage pools are not supported on the following operating systems:

    • HP-UX
    • Linux on Power systems (big endian)
    • Linux zSeries
    • Solaris

Amazon S3 compatible vendors that are validated by the Ready for IBM Storage: S3 Object Storage Validation program (started in May 2017)

IBM Spectrum Protect supports cloud object storage devices that are compatible with the Amazon S3 web service and are validated by the Ready for IBM Storage: S3 Object Storage Validation program. Starting in May 2017, S3 compatible cloud object storage devices that have completed the validation program will be added to the following list of supported storage devices for IBM Spectrum Protect. Visit this page regularly to find the latest list of supported cloud object storage devices.

To be validated as an IBM Spectrum Protect storage device, the device must undergo tests that are defined by IBM to determine that the device meets requirements for functionality and performance.

Many factors affect the performance of object storage backup and recovery. A major factor is the network configuration and specifically, the available network bandwidth for transferring data to and from the device. Although the following validated devices were tested for acceptable performance, you might observe performance that does not achieve the backup and restore data rates that were reported with IBM Spectrum Protect and on-premise IBM Cloud Object Storage.

For more information, see the Business Partner Application Showcase: ReadyforIBMStorage website. Vendors who would like to participate can contact IBM PartnerWorld Member Services at pwms@us.ibm.com.
