Installing InfoSphere Data Architect (IDA) and Rational Software Architect (RSA) to a common environment for use with the IBM Industry Models

Question & Answer

Question

How can RSA and IDA share a common Eclipse environment (co-shelling) for the use of the IBM Industry Data and SOA Models for Banking and Insurance ?

Answer

As long as you are installing versions of RSA and IDA that are based on the same version of Eclipse (e.g. IDA 9.1.2 and RSA 9.1.2), then you can choose to install them both to the same IBM Installation Manager Package Group.

The following document has details of compatible Eclipse-based offerings that can be co-shelled:

Co-shelling IDA and RSA enables you to view Data, Process and Service models in one instance of Eclipse.

If you have the IBM InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog for Eclipse installed, then you can also see the Business Vocabulary and the mappings between the Data, Process and Service models and the Business Vocabulary in one instance of Eclipse.

This is very useful for both Banking and Insurance as both are comprised of Data, Process and Service models with a shared Business Vocabulary.

Installing RSA and IDA to a common environment

  • Install the first product [it's best to install RSA first]
  • When installing the second product, choose the same IBM Installation Manager Package Group that the first product was installed into

For example, if RSA 9.1.2 is already installed, then when installing IDA 9.1.2, in the Install Packages wizard page in IBM Installation Manager, select the Use the existing package group option and select the Package Group that RSA 9.1.2 was installed to:

Similarly, if IDA 9.1.2 is already installed, then when installing RSA 9.1.2, in the Install Packages wizard page select the Use the existing package group option and select the Package Group that IDA 9.1.2 was installed to.

Note: The IBM Installation Manager will not allow incompatible products to be installed to the same Package Group.
