Troubleshooting
Problem
This document provides recommendations on how to configure your IDA or/and RSA for use with the IBM Industry Models.
Resolving The Problem
Eclipse maximum Java heap size
By default the maximum Java heap size of RSA and IDA is 1Gb.
To improve the performance of RSA and IDA when using our models this needs to be increased:
- in 32-bit IDA, set the maximum Java heap size to 1536Mb
- in 32-bit RSA, set the maximum Java heap size to 1280Mb
- in 64-bit IDA or RSA, the maximum Java heap size is limited only by the amount of physical RAM on your computer. For instance, on a computer with 8Gb+ RAM you could set the maximum Java heap size to 4096Mb
To set the maximum Java heap size:
- close RSA/IDA
- locate the eclipse.ini file, which is in the RSA/IDA installation folder (e.g. C:\IBM\RSA_64)
- open eclipse.ini in a text editor (if RSA/IDA is installed in the default Program Files folder run the text editor as Administrator)
- change the -Xmx option
- save eclipse.ini
- restart RSA/IDA
To show the Java heap status in RSA/IDA:
- Choose the Window > Preferences menu item:
- Select the General preference page
- Enable the Show heap status option
- Click OK
The Java heap status is now displayed in the bottom right of the RSA/IDA window.
You can request a Garbage Collection by clicking the bin icon - this can improve the performance of RSA/IDA after a memory intensive operation has been performed.
Local History
To help prevent loss of work due to a model file being accidentally deleted or becoming corrupted due to an RSA/IDA crash, you can configure the Local History preferences to maintain a local history of large model files:
- Choose the Window > Preferences menu item:
- Select the General > Workspace > Local History preference page
- Enable the Limit history size option
- Set the Days to keep files option, e.g 7
- Set the Maximum entries per file option, e.g. to 5
- Set the Maximum file size (MB), e.g. to 50
- Click OK
For more information, select the Help > Help Contents menu in RSA/IDA and navigate to Eclipse documentation > Eclipse platform > Tasks > Working with local history.
Note: Configuring the Local History preferences to maintain local history for large files can consume a lot of disk space on your machine.
Pluglet Development
Pluglets are small Java applications that are used to make minor extensions to the RSA/IDA workbench in a simple and straightforward way.
When Pluglet Development is enabled you can run existing Industry Models pluglets. See Extending the modeling environment using pluglets for more information on pluglets.
Before pluglet development can be enabled, the Pluglet Support feature must be installed to RSA/IDA.
If you did not choose to install the Pluglet feature when installing RSA or IDA, you can install it by modifying RSA/IDA in Installation Manager:
- close RSA/IDA
- run IBM Installation Manager
- click Modify
- choose the Package Group that RSA/IDA is installed to and click Next
- in the Modify Packages page enable the Pluglet Support feature and click Next
- click Modify
To enable pluglet development in RSA/IDA:
- Choose the Window > Preferences menu item:
- Select General > Capabilities then click Advanced...
- Enable Eclipse Developer > Pluglet Development capability
- Click OK
- Click OK
