How to move Cognos Analytics Reports, Dashboards and Data Modules from one environment to another

Question

How do you deploy Cognos Analytics content from one server to another? An example use case would be when transferring content from TEST to UAT or PRODUCTION or migrating content to a new server.

Answer

Steps:


There are 2 popular export methods:


1. You can move individual reports manually using your browser by copying the Report Specification.


2. You can move groups of reports, dashboard, and data modules as a Package Deployment.


OPTION 1 - How to move a Cognos Analytics Report by using the Report Specification

1. Log on to the Host Server and open the report you would like to export.

2. Click the Edit (pencil) icon to edit the report.

3. Click the Pages icon.

 

In versions prior to 11.0.5.0, click the Navigate icon

4. Right-click the Report icon and choose Copy Report to Clipboard.

5. Open a text editor such as Notepad. Paste the contents of your clipboard into Notepad and save the file.

6. Log on to your target server and click: New > Report. Choose a blank report with no package selected.

7. click the Pages icon (or prior to 11.0. 5.0 the Navigate icon) then right-click the report icon and choose Open Report from Clipboard.

8. Save the report.

OPTION 2 - How to move multiple Cognos Analytics Reports, Dashboards, and Data Modules as a Package Deployment

- Create a Deployment Export.

- Transfer the Deployment Package to the new server.

- Import the Deployment Package

Step 1. Create a Deployment Export

1. To create a Package Deployment Export, Go to Manage>Administration Console. Click Configuration>Content Administration, and the New Export button.

2. Enter a Name for your Deployment and for Deployment method choose select public folders, directory, and library content then click Next.

3. Click add to choose the folder or folders you would like to export.

4. If you are migrating Data Modules and these are dependent on uploaded files or data sets, ensure to include these objects in your deployment export, and make sure you select: "Include report output versions & Include Dataset Output versions" option in the deployment settings.

5. For a standard export, follow the wizard to accept the default settings and choose a Name for your Export.

6. For additional security, you can set an encryption password by checking Encrypt the content of the archive.

7. Click Next to confirm the summary and then Finish to Save and run once.

8. Finally, Run the Deployment Export.

Step 2. Transfer the Deployment Package to the new server

1. On the host server, locate the Deployment Package which is stored in the following location: ../<Server1>/deployment/<filename>.zip

2. Copy the file to the target server and place in the deployment location ../<Server2>/deployment/

Step 3. Import the Deployment Package

1. To import, go to Manage>Administration Console. Click Configuration>Content Administration, and the New Import button.

2. Select your Deployment Package and enter the password if you set one.

3. Specify a Name for your import job and select the folder to import into.

4. If you are using Dashboards and Data Modules that use import files. Make sure you include report output versions and dataset output.

5. For a standard import, accept the default settings and click Run to finish the job.

Once the import has finished you should now be able to view your content.
