Preventive Service Planning
Abstract
The IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments product offering is enabled for discovery by IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT).
This document describes the steps required to use ILMT to determine the license consumption of IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection for HyperV and IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection for VMware.
General ILMT documentation is available here:

Data that is protected by this product is always on the same host where the software is installed. Therefore, you can use ILMT to determine the license consumption that is associated with this product without any additional steps required.
Data Protection for VMware
Data that is protected by this product is usually not on the same host where the software is installed.
Therefore, the following steps must be taken before you can use ILMT to automatically determine the license consumption:
1. Compile a list of virtual machines (VMs) that are being backed up by Data Protection for VMware:
- To view VMs that are being backed up, complete one of the following set of steps:
-
- Open the IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments GUI.
- Click Restore on the menu bar.
- Expand the list in the navigation pane to identify all VMs that were backed up.
-
- Open the IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments GUI.
- Click Backup on the menu bar.
- Identify all VMs that are scheduled for backup.
-
2. Deploy the IBM Spectrum Protect Data Protection for VMware Managed Node tag to the Virtual Machines:
- Tip: If you are using templates for the VMs, it might be helpful to add this tag in the template.
3. Install the BigFix client and deploy ILMT scanner on the VMs that are being backed up:
-
- Install the ILMT agent following the instructions available on http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SS8JFY_9.2.0/com.ibm.lmt.doc/welcome/LMT_welcome.html
- Repeat this step for all the VMs that are being backed up.
- Tip: If you are using templates for the VMs, it might be helpful to add this installation to the template.
4. Configure the ILMT VM Manager Tool so that it can connect to either the vCenter or the individual ESX / ESXi boxes where these VMs exist.
- For instructions, see http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/SS8JFY_9.2.0/com.ibm.lmt.doc/Inventory/admin/t_managing_virtual_machine.html
You are now ready for automatic determination of license consumption of Data Protection for VMware.
