Using the same nodename for filesystem and other backups

Question & Answer

Question

Can the same nodename be used for filesystem backups and Data Protection client backups?

Cause

To simplify IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Backup-Archive client configuration with other IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client products like:

  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases
- Data Protection for Oracle
- Data Protection for Microsoft SQL,
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail
- Data Protection for Lotus Domino
- Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange
... the same nodename could be used for the filesystem and Data Protection backups and the backup scheduling via the IBM Tivoli Storage Manager server.

Answer

This way of storing backups is not recommended because this may lead to unexpected and unsupported results, for example as described in APAR IT16460 (COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOL ERRORS MAY OCCUR WHEN USING 'TDPOSYNC SYNCDB').
A separate and unique nodename should be used to store backups for the individual IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client types.
