Problem

DEFINE PATH to an IBM tape drive fails with error- ANR8420E DEFINE PATH: An I/O error occurred while accessing drive DRIVE00.

Symptom

A server trace using the PVR, MMS, and NA trace classes will contain the following messages-

[PvrPsTapeGetModel]:TSM device driver mt on tsmmt29 detected, not allowed as Generic Tape.
08:23:29.689 [203][pstapiop.c][1118][PvrPsTapeGetModel]:PvrPsTapeGetModel returns 2813.
08:23:29.689 [203][pvr.c][6993][PvrGetModel]:Unable to determine the device type for device /dev/rmt/tsmmt29./2813
08:23:29.689 [203][mmsdrive.c][4718][MmsUpdateDrive]:PvrGetModel returned rc = 2813.

Cause

The device specified in the DEFINE PATH command is the special device file created by the Tivoli Storage Manager device driver. This device driver should only be used for non-IBM branded drives.

Resolving The Problem

Specify the IBM device driver special device file name for DEVICE in the DEFINE PATH command when defining the path to the drives. For help finding the special name for the IBM tape devices, refer to the IBM Tape Device Drivers Installation and User's guide:
