ANR8387I All entry/exit ports full, but no tapes are in the I/O door

Troubleshooting

Problem

During checkout, the message ANR8387I is received stating that all of the slots in the I/O door are full, but there are no tapes in the I/O door.

Symptom

Virtual export/import slots in use (VIO).

Cause

Library virtualization is in use. More VIO slots are defined than are available in the physical I/O door. During a checkout, an operator opens the I/O door to remove tapes, but instead of closing the door so that the checkout can continue moving tapes to the door, more tapes are placed in the door for a checkin process which should not run concurrently with the checkout process (operator did this in error). These tapes are then moved into the VIO slots inside the library that the pending checkout process is waiting to use. Since the VIO slots are filled with incoming tapes, the checkout fails with ANR8387I.

Environment

SCSI tape library which is virtualized and using virtual I/O slots

Resolving The Problem

Cancel the checkout process using the CANCEL PROCESS command. Cancel any pending requests using the CANCEL REQUEST command. Run checkin commands to check in and therefore move the tapes out of the VIO slots into internal slots. If these tapes are not desired to be in the Tivoli Storage Manager inventory, they can be checked out later. At this point, they need to be checked in so that the VIO slots can be emptied and the checkout process can finish.

Commands to check in tapes (should be run in this order):

checkin libv <library name> search=bulk checklabel=barcode status=scratch

checkin libv <library name> search=bulk checklabel=barcode status=private

Then run the checkout process again and it should complete given that these checkins actually did clear out the virtual I/O slots.

In the IBM 3584 tape library (aka TS3500), the VIO slots are the element range 769 to 1023. If any I/O slots are using these element numbers, then the ALMS virtual library layer is in use.

Note: There is nothing wrong with utilizing VIO with Tivoli Storage Manager and having more VIO slots than physically exist. However, if you run your library in this mode, you need to ensure that you do not place more tapes in the library for checkin while the checkout is still in process. When you open the library door to remove tapes, do not insert tapes for checkin unless you are certain the checkout completed in its entirety.
Query Process will verify the checkout process is complete.

It is recommended that the number of VIO slots available to the library be increased to the maximum. When a library has been upgraded from physical it will default to the number of physical I/O slots for VIO use.
