This document details the Hardware & Software requirements for IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.6 and Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.6.

The following components share the same hardware and software requirements. The components are:

IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.6 --> which is part of the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 4.1.6 product.
Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.6 --> which is part of the IBM Spectrum Protect™ for Mail 7.1.6 product.

Compatible hardware supported by the operating system and the Microsoft Exchange Server

Disk Space

The following disk space is required for the x64 platform:

A minimum of 208 MB of disk space for the product and language packs to be installed.
At least 2.1 GB disk space for "Additional Microsoft prerequisites" which will be installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system when starting the Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server or FlashCopy Manager for Microsoft Exchange Server component installation.

TIP: Some of the prerequisites defined in this document may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirement prerequisites detailed in the "Additional Microsoft prerequisites" section of this document are installed before starting the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server installation process.

Metadata space requirements (IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server only)

In addition to the space that is required for the global product installation, IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot uses disk space to hold vital product data that is used to track and manage snapshots. By default, the metadata is stored in the'vss_staging' subdirectory of the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component's installation directory.

TIP: The IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component is also known as the IBM Spectrum Protect™ Backup-Archive Client.

The amount of space required is directly proportional to the number of snapshots that you maintain on the system. Ensure that there is at least 1 megabyte of available free disk space to hold the metadata for each snapshot that you plan to keep on the system.

In addition, if you are protecting a Microsoft Exchange Server, IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot keeps mailbox history information in the metadata to support individual mailbox restore (IMR) processing. The amount of space required for this is directly proportional to the number of mailboxes in the entire organization. Ensure that for each user mailbox in your organization, at least 50 kilobytes of disk space are free to hold the metadata.

Therefore, it is recommended that you have at least 200MB available for the above described metadata - though the need for more is possible depending on your operating environment.

Minimum software and operating system requirements

The following information describes the minimum software and operating system requirements when using IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.6 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.6.

Operating systems

The following operating systems are supported for the x64 platform:

64-bit Windows Server 2008 SP2, and later maintenance levels: Standard x64, Enterprise x64, or Datacenter x64, editions
64-bit Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, and later maintenance levels: Standard x64, Enterprise x64, or Datacenter x64, editions

64-bit Windows Server 2012, and later maintenance levels: Standard or Datacenter editions
64-bit Windows Server 2012 R2, and later maintenance levels: Standard or Datacenter editions

The following additional operating systems are supported for the x64 platform but only with the Remote Management capabilities of the MMC GUI interface:

64-bit Windows 7 SP1 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Ultimate editions
64-bit Windows 8 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Enterprise editions
64-bit Windows 8.1 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Enterprise editions
64-bit Windows 10 and later Service Pack maintenance levels: Professional or Enterprise editions

Note: Support for the Mailbox restore browser is not available when using the Remote Management capabilities from a Windows 10 system.

The following application levels are supported:

Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 SP3, and later maintenance levels: Standard or Enterprise Editions

Note: Microsoft requires Exchange Server 2010 SP3 in order to support Windows PowerShell 3.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 CU2 and later CU and maintenance levels: Standard or Enterprise Editions

Microsoft Exchange Server 2016: Standard and Enterprise Editions and later maintenance levels (Support started with 4.1.4.2 / 7.1.4.2 release)

Additional Microsoft prerequisites

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed prior to using IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.6 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.6:

Windows PowerShell 3 or Windows PowerShell 4
Windows PowerShell 5 when used with Windows 10
Windows Management Framework 3 or Windows Management Framework 4
Windows Management Framework 5 when used with Windows 10

The following Microsoft Exchange prerequisite levels are supported with Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange and IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Exchange:

When using Microsoft Exchange 2010, the minimum level supported for Microsoft Exchange Messaging API (MAPI) Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) is version 6.5.8244.0.
When using Microsoft Exchange 2013, the minimum level supported for Microsoft Exchange Messaging API (MAPI) Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) is version 6.5.8320.0.

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required, and are installed automatically by IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.6 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.6, if not already present on your machine.

TIP: Installation of these prerequisites may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that these prerequisites are installed before starting the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server installation process.

Note: These prerequisites are not automatically installed when you create your own silent installation package to install via msiexec. In that scenario, you must manually ensure that the prerequisites are installed.

64-bit IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 4.1.6

Note: This is a component included in the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot on Windows 4.1.6 package. It is also known as the IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client 7.1.6.

The IBM Spectrum Protect API Client 7.1.6, and later 7.1.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions

Note: The IBM Spectrum Protect API Version 7.1.6 is included and automatically installed with Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 7.1.6.

Any Tivoli Storage Manager or IBM Spectrum Protect Server currently in support which is supported by the version of the IBM Spectrum Protect API Client, or IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client, used in the environment.
