Substitution of items for other items in Maximo Asset Configuration Manager v7.6.2.1

Question & Answer

Question

Are there enhancements in Maximo Asset Configuration Manager v7.6.2.1 that enable me to use items interchangeably on a model and can I associate technical records with a range of item numbers?

Answer

To support the interchangeability of CM items, you can define the type of interchangeability that applies to the CM items that are associated with build positions on models. Maximo Asset Configuration Manager v7.6.2.1 supports the following interchangeability types:

    One-way interchangeability
If item number A and item number B are valid item numbers in a build position on a model, you can specify that item number B can replace item number A, but item number A cannot replace item number B.

    Two-way interchangeability
If item number A and item number B are valid item numbers in a build position on a model, item number A can replace item number B, and item number B can replace item number A. All item numbers that are valid for a specific build position on a model are considered to be two-way interchangeable by default.

    Not interchangeable
A component can only be replaced by another component with exactly the same item number.

You can define interchangeability on positive item number applicability rules. You must create a positive item number applicability rule for an item number before you can configure the interchangeability rule to apply to it.

Procedure
1. In the Models application, select a model.
2. On the Build Hierarchy and Position Rules tab, configure a positive item number applicability rule:
    a. On the Hierarchy Tree tab, select a position row in the build hierarchy.
    b. On the Item Numbers sub-tab, select an item number and on the Configuration sub-tab, select the check box for the item number applicability rule to use. The check box is automatically selected if the rule that you want to create is a default configuration. In this case, deselect the check box and select it again to manually create a rule that you can configure for interchangeability.
3. On the Advanced tab, select the rule that you created and configure interchangeability:
OptionConfiguration
One-way-interchangeabilityIn the CSL field, type:
item-one-way (item_number_A,item_number_B)
and then click Compile.
Two-way interchangeabilityThis option is the default option and no configuration is required.
Item not interchangeableIn the CSL field, type:
item-not-interchangeable (item_number_A)
and then click Compile.

The first item number in the interchangeability rule must be the item number that is associated with the item number applicability rule. You can add multiple rules in the CSL field, separated by a semi-colon (;), for example, to configure one-way interchangeability of an item number with several alternative item numbers.
4. Repeat the previous step to configure interchangeability rules for other item numbers.
5. Save the record.

Associating part number ranges with technical publications
In a technical record, on the Item Number tab, you can specify a range of item numbers for which the record is effective. Valid item number ranges include a comma, a two-dot ellipsis, or a combination of commas and ellipses.

For example, the following are all valid item number ranges:

A1000..A1999
A1000,B100,C100
A1000,A1999,B100,C100

When you specify an item number range, the format is validated by the build data interpreter service.
