Notes client 901FP4/FP5 hangs due to "org.eclipse.swt.SWTError: No more handles"

Problem

Notes client 901FP4/FP5 hangs intermittently.

Symptom

Prior to Notes client hangs, it gets in a state where UI elements turn black and/or fail to repaint.


Environment

Notes Standard 9.0.1 FP4, FP5 and FP5IF1
OS: Windows 7,Windows 8.1

Diagnosing the problem

Tried uninstall Notes and make a clean install once again but it does not help.

In most cases javacore files are created corresponding with the crash.
Every javacore file contains the following error:
"Dump Event "systhrow" (00040000) Detail "java/lang/OutOfMemoryError"

Or check <NotesData>\workspace\trace-log-*.xml files, the following error can be found:

org.eclipse.swt.SWTException: Failed to execute runnable

Resolving the problem

This issue has been reported to Quality Engineering as SPR # DSCK9TUNDR and has been fixed in Notes 9.0.1 FP5 IF2 and 9.0.1 FP6


Following workaround might work for some problematic machines which had changed DPI(Pixels/Dots Per Inch) setting:

  • Open Control Panel
  • Click Personalize > Display > Make text and other items larger or smaller
  • If current setting is Medium - 125% (120 DPI) or Larger - 150% (144 DPI), set it as Smaller - 100% (default: 96 DPI)
  • Click Apply and logoff current account, then logon again
