Troubleshooting
Problem
A backup-archive client runs a scheduled incremental backup of a file system. The backup of the file system does not complete and the schedule fails with Return code = 12.
Symptom
The client dsmsched.log shows the following message :
ANS1512E Scheduled event 'DAILY_INC' failed. Return code = 12.
Diagnosing The Problem
Review the dsmsched.log of the backup. When a backup of the file system completes successfully, the following message is logged :
Successful incremental backup of '/myfs/*'
In this case, there is no message indicating that the backup was successful.
Review the client dsmerror.log file to find the following related message :
ANS1225E Insufficient memory for file compression/expansion
The messages indicate that the backup ran out of memory.
Resolving The Problem
Verify the AIX ulimit settings with the "ulimit -a" command. The command output should show :
# ulimit -a
time(seconds) unlimited
file(blocks) unlimited
data(kbytes) unlimited
stack(kbytes) 4194304
memory(kbytes) unlimited
coredump(blocks) unlimited
nofiles(descriptors) unlimited
threads(per process) unlimited
processes(per user) unlimited
Set the AIX ulimits to unlimited (except for stack) prior to running the backup. On machines that have constrained memory, also turn off compression for the client backup.
