Question & Answer
Question
Over time, some options available to tweak Tivoli Storage Manager or Spectrum Protect server database reorg behavior became deprecated or obsolete. Use the information from this technote to clean up your dsmserv.opt file.
Cause
With V6.3.5 and V7.1.1, the following list of reorg options are available to tweak server reorg options:
REORGBEGINTIME
REORGDURATION
ALLOWREORGTABLE
ALLOWREORGINDEX
DISABLEREORGTable
DISABLEREORGIndex
DISABLEREORGCleanupindex
The disable options have been introduced with V6.3.5 and V7.1 servers below 7.1.1.200/300 and were added to the dsmserv.opt file automatically.
However, as of Tivoli Storage Manager 7.1.1.200/300 and Spectrum Protect 7.1.3, the recommendations for some of the options have been changed. You might want to clean up your dsmserv.opt file as a server update will not adjust the dsmserv.opt file automatically.
Answer
For the options to define the reorg window, REORGBEGINTIME and REORGDURATION, if the window works for you, you can leave the related entries unchanged.
It is preferable to not include options in the server options file that are the same as the default value:
ALLOWREORGTABLE default YES in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.x, 7.1.3.x and newer
ALLOWREORGINDEX default YES in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.x, 7.1.3.x and newer
DISABLEREORGTABLE default empty/no tables disabled in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.x, 7.1.3.x and newer
DISABLEREORGINDEX only exists in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.000, 7.1.1.100, default BF_AGGREGATED_BITFILES,BF_BITFILE_EXTENTS,BACKUP_OBJECTS,ARCHIVE_OBJECTS in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.000, 7.1.1.100
DISABLEREORGCLEANUPINDEX only exists in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.000, 7.1.1.100, default empty/no tables disabled in 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.000, 7.1.1.100
TSM server versio | ALLOWREORGTABLE | ALLOWREORGINDEX | DISABLEREORGTABLE | DISABLEREORGINDEX | DISABLEREORGCLEANUPINDEX |
6.3.5.x | (1) | (1) | (2) | (1) | (1) |
7.1.1.x | (1) | (1) | (2) | (1) | (1) |
7.1.3.x | (1) | (1) | (2) | (1) | (1) |
7.1.4.x | (1) | (1) | (2) | (1) | (1) |
(1) Do not specify in the server options file. Remove from server options file.
(2) BF_AGGREGATED_BITFILES,BF_BITFILE_EXTENTS,BACKUP_OBJECTS,ARCHIVE_OBJECTS
So for 6.3.5.x, 7.1.1.x, 7.1.3.x and newer
Do not include these server options in the server options file
DISABLEREORGINDEX
DISABLEREORGCLEANUPINDEX
ALLOWREORGTABLE
ALLOWREORGINDEX
Include this line in the server options file
DISABLEREORGTable BF_AGGREGATED_BITFILES,BF_BITFILE_EXTENTS,BACKUP_OBJECTS,ARCHIVE_OBJECTS
Note: at the 6.1.4 server level, the INDEXREORGPERIOD option was introduced, the recommendation for this option is to stay with the default. If there is a INDEXREORGPERIOD statement in your dsmserv.opt file, the recommendation is to remove the line.
