This document details the Hardware & Software requirements for the IBM Spectrum Protect™ VSS Requestor 4.1.3 component.

Tip: Beginning with Version 4.1.3, Tivoli Storage FlashCopy® Manager is now IBM Spectrum Protect™ Snapshot. Some applications such as the software fulfillment systems and IBM License Metric Tool use the new product name. The IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component supports:

VSS operations in Microsoft Exchange environments
VSS operations in Microsoft SQL Server environments
VSS operations for the File System and Custom Application features contained in the MMC Snapin and Base System Services component.

Minimum hardware requirements

The following information describes the minimum hardware and disk space requirements when using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 4.1.3 component.

x86 Hardware

The following hardware is supported for the x86 platform:

Compatible hardware supported by the operating system

x86 Disk Space

The following disk space is required for the x86 platform:

A minimum of 500MB of disk space, and optionally:
At least 46 MB disk space for the VSS Requestor component prerequisites included in the installation package (which are installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system).
At least 20MB of disk space for each Language Pack to be installed (there are a total of 9 available).

Compatible hardware supported by the operating system and the application environment being protected

x64 Disk Space

The following disk space is required for the x64 platform:

A minimum of 750MB of disk space, and optionally:
At least 46 MB disk space for the VSS Requestor component prerequisites included in the installation package (which are installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system).
At least 20MB of disk space for each Language Pack to be installed (there are a total of 9 available).

TIP: Some of the above referenced prerequisites may require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirements prerequisites detailed in the Additional Microsoft prerequisites section of this document are installed before starting the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor installation process.

The following information describes the minimum software and operating system requirements when using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component.

Note: Windows Storage Server 2012 and 2012 R2 are only supported for functionality that is also available and supported by the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component on Windows Server 2012 and 2012 R2 Editions.

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed prior to using the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 4.1.3 component:

Windows Powershell 3 or Windows PowerShell 4
Windows Management Framework 3 or Windows Management Framework 4

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are also required, and are installed automatically by the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 4.1.3 if not already present on your machine.

VSS Provider requirements

The VSS provider is the snapshot component used to create and manage the volume shadow copies. This component may leverage snapshot capable storage subsystems that implement a VSS Hardware Provider that strictly adheres to the Microsoft VSS provider interface.

IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server, IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Microsoft SQL Server, and the File System and Custom Applications support feature will support any VSS Provider (including the Windows Systems Provider) that strictly adheres to the Microsoft VSS Provider interface.

Additional external storage devices supported with IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot on Windows are documented in the section External storage devices supported with VSS operations.

Refer to the documentation that was shipped with your VSS Provider in order to understand the software and hardware requirements of your specific VSS Provider.

Base VSS Provider requirements

Ensure that the following Microsoft Hot Fix has been applied:

For Windows 2008: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975831

Ensure that any Microsoft hot fixes required by the VSS hardware provider used in your environment are installed. These may include, but are not limited to, hotfixes related to:

Host Bus Adapter (HBA)
Multipath I/O (MPIO)
Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
Virtual Disk Service (VDS)

Hotfix KB 952790 is required when performing VSS Instant Restore operations in a Windows Server 2008 non-cluster environment.

Additional VSS Provider requirements

When using any of the following capabilities:

VSS Off-loaded backups
Import VSS snapshots only when needed
Mounting of VSS snapshots to remote servers

a VSS provider that support transportable shadow copies must be used.

Additional VSS Provider requirements for Instant Restore operations

Ensure that the appropriate Microsoft hotfixes are installed.
Microsoft hotfix KB 952790 is required when performing VSS Instant Restore operations in a Windows Server 2008 non-cluster environment.

External storage devices supported with VSS operations

Any storage device that implements the VSS provider interface as defined in the VSS Provider Requirements section of this document.

Note:

One of the IBM System Storage DS3000/DS4000/DS5000 family of devices, as supported by the LSI Microsoft VDS/VSS Provider 10.60.G0.04 and later maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions.

The following devices implement the VSS provider interface as defined in the VSS Provider Requirements section of this document, and have been tested with the IBM Spectrum Protect Snapshot 4.1.3 on Windows components, with Instant Restore operations:
