Preventive Service Planning
Abstract
With HANA 1.0 SPS 10 SAP introduced incremental and differential backups in SAP HANA. These types of backups are supported by IBM Spectrum Protect™ for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Data Protection for SAP HANA version 7.1.3 or higher. This document outlines the required adjustments to the IBM Spectrum Protect configuration.

SAP HANA uses the BACKINT interface to send the backup data to IBM Spectrum Protect. The data for incremental and differential backups uses the same processing parameters as the data for the redo log backups. This causes the data to be stored in the same management classes that are used for the redo logs. Although the amount of data for incremental or differential backups is much less than the amount for a full database backup, it may be considerably larger than what was calculated for storage of the redo logs.
There are two options to address this issue:
- Keep the current configuration and ensure there is enough space available in the storage pool both the redo log and incremental/differential backups.
- Create a copy of the current IBM Spectrum Protect for ERP profile with a new name.
- Go to the directory that contains the existing profile and copy it, for example:
# cd /usr/sap/TPR/SYS/global/hdb/opt/hdbconfig/
# cp initTPR.utl initTPR_log.utl - Change the parameter BRARCHIVEMGTCLASS in the original profile (in this example initTPR.utl) to the management class that should be used for incremental and differential backups.
- Open the Backup Console of the SAP HANA studio, go to the Configuration tab and un-check the box "Use the same parameter file for data backup and log backup.".
- Now the entry for 'Backint Parameter File' can be edited. Enter the name of the copy of the profile created before (in the example initTPR_log.utl)
