WebPlayer plugin failed to install on IE browser with error "An add-on for this website failed to run"

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem

WebPlayer plugin failed to install on IE browser with error "An add-on for this website failed to run"

Cause

The plugin can fail to install due to the reasons listed below:

  • After updating MS Security Patch kb3058515, installing WebPlayer plugin on the Internet Explorer browser fails with error "Add on for this website failed to run"
  • IE browser default security settings might block the plugin from installing

Resolving the problem

Workaround-1: Install the plugin using stand-alone installer.

Workaround-2: Remove MS Security patch KB3058515 and then retry installing the WebPlayer plugin using the auto-server install method.

Review the fix from Microsoft, as mentioned in KB3072449: "Installation of ActiveX controls may fail in Internet Explorer"
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3072449

Workaround-3: Include the Sametime servers in the browser’s Trusted Sites list:
In the IE browser, click Tools > Internet Options and click the Security tab.

  • Click Trusted Sites > Sites.
  • Add the host name for the Sametime servers and if applicable, the URL for an alternate update site:
    1. Add the Sametime Meeting Server and Sametime Proxy Server host names.
    2. If you use an Alternate Update site, provide the URL where the plug-in will be hosted. This matches the URL you will provide in the Web AV Settings tab for the Proxy Server.
    3. Do not select Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.
