Security Bulletin

Summary

OpenSSL vulnerabilities were disclosed on January 8, 2015 by the OpenSSL Project. OpenSSL is used by IBM Cognos TM1. IBM Cognos TM1 has addressed the applicable CVE.

The RC4 “Bar Mitzvah” Attack for SSL/TLS affects IBM Cognos TM1

Vulnerability Details

CVEID: CVE-2015-2808
DESCRIPTION: The RC4 algorithm, as used in the TLS protocol and SSL protocol, could allow a remote attacker to obtain sensitive information. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to remotely expose account credentials without requiring an active man-in-the-middle session. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to retrieve credit card data or other sensitive information. This vulnerability is commonly referred to as "Bar Mitzvah Attack".
CVSS Base Score: 5
CVSS Temporal Score: See https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/101851 for the current score

CVE-IDCVE-2014-3569
DESCRIPTION:
 OpenSSL is vulnerable to a denial of service, caused by the failure to properly handle attempts to use unsupported protocols by the ssl23_get_client_hello function in s23_srvr.c. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability using an unexpected handshake to trigger a NULL pointer dereference and cause the daemon to crash.

Workarounds and Mitigations

IBM recommends the following additional steps:

For Cognos Insight to mitigate the vulnerability in the xulrunner embedded browser:

1.1) Locate Cognos Insight installation directory.
1.2) For all directories matching <installation_directory>\plugins\com.ibm.cognos.isv.xulrunner.win32.*
1.3) Open file <installation_directory>\plugins\com.ibm.cognos.isv.xulrunner.win32.*\xulrunner\greprefs.js with a text editor
1.4) For each RC4 cipher which is set to 'true' change the value to 'false'
e.g.

line:

pref("security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_md5", true);

becomes:

pref("security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_128_md5", false);

IBM also highly recommends that if Cognos Insight connects to TM1 Planning Service, the following steps should be performed:

2.1) Start Cognos Configuration

2.2) Navigate to Security/Cryptography/Cognos

2.3) Open the supported cipher suites selection dialog

2.4) Select all cipher suites that have RC4 in the the name and remove them from the Current Values List. Select OK to save the new list.

2.5) Save and restart your service using Cognos Configuration.

You should verify applying this configuration change does not cause any compatibility issues. Not disabling the RC4 stream cipher will expose yourself to the attack described above. IBM recommends that you review your entire environment to identify other areas where you have enabled the RC4 stream cipher and take appropriate mitigation and remediation actions..
