Troubleshooting
Problem
Attempts to install IBM Rational Publishing Engine (RPE) on Windows 64-bit fails with "You cannot update a 64-bit version of Installation Manager to a 32-bit version"
Symptom
The installation will fail with an error message similar to the following:
You cannot update a 64-bit version of Installation Manager to a 32-bit version
CRIMA1194E: You cannot update a 64-bit version of Installation Manager to a 32-bit version.
Explanation: You cannot change the bit mode of an installed instance of Installation Manager by updating Installation Manager. You must use the same bit mode that the installed instance of Installation Manager uses to update Installation Manager.
User Action: Use the Installation Manager installation files that are the same bit mode as the installed instance of Installation Manager. Check the name of the compressed file or the directory that contains the installation files. The file name contains information about the operating system and bit mode. For example, a file name for 64-bit might contain a term like the following text: linux_gtk_x86_64 or linux_x86_64. A file name for 32-bit might contain a term like the following text: linux_gtk_x86 or linux_x86.
Cause
The 32-bit version of Installation Manager comes bundled with RPE 1.3 & 2.0. When you have Installation Manager 64-bit version installed it cannot update Installation Manager.
RPE 1.3 requires IBM Installation Manager (IM) 1.7.3. and RPE 2.0 requires IM version 1.8.2.1.
Environment
Windows 64-bit.
Diagnosing The Problem
Review the version of IBM Installation Manager you have installed on your machine.
Resolving The Problem
To resolve the problem you need to do the following:
- Install 64-bit IBM Installation Manager 1.7.3 for RPE 1.3 or 1.8.2.1 for RPE 2.0 or a later version of IM if available.
- Configure Installation Manager to use the 1.3 installation files
- Install 1.3 from Installation Manager.
