Troubleshooting
Problem
The temporary objects created during the Data Protection for SQL backup still remain on the Tivoli Storage Manager server in an active state after the next backup completes successfully.
Cause
The temporary objects belong to the same peer group and will both be removed from the Tivoli Storage Manager when the Group Leader is removed.
Diagnosing The Problem
In a select statement on the Tivoli Storage Manager server the temporary files exist. For example, the objects in the \data\0001 file space are shown in a select statement output as follows:
NODE_NAME: SQLNODE2
FILESPACE_NAME: SQLSERV2\data\0001
FILESPACE_ID: 2
STATE: INACTIVE_VERSION
TYPE: FILE
HL_NAME: \msdb\full\
LL_NAME:
OBJECT_ID: 55318
BACKUP_DATE: 2014-12-23 14:39:50.000000
DEACTIVATE_DATE: 2014-12-23 14:39:59.000000
OWNER:
CLASS_NAME: DEFAULT
NODE_NAME: SQLNODE2
FILESPACE_NAME: SQLSERV2\data\0001
FILESPACE_ID: 2
STATE: ACTIVE_VERSION
TYPE: FILE
HL_NAME: \msdb\full.2014122314395000001430\
LL_NAME: 1
OBJECT_ID: 55319
BACKUP_DATE: 2014-12-23 14:39:50.000000
DEACTIVATE_DATE:
OWNER:
CLASS_NAME: DEFAULT
Then check the peer groups under which these objects are stored by running the "show version" command on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. This would have output similar to:
SQLSERV2\data\0001 : \msdb\full\ (MC: DEFAULT)
hlID: 0671FD5F291474A365024FD1781BCE1B1192613B
Inactive, Inserted 12/23/2014 14:39:50 (UTC 12/23/2014 11:39:50), Deactivated 12/23/2014 14:39:59
ObjId: 55318, GroupMap 0x00020000, objType 0x02, bypassRecogToken NULL, flags 0000
Peer Group Leader, GroupId: 55318
SQLSERV2\data\0001 : \msdb\full.2014122314395000001430\ 1 (MC: DEFAULT)
hlID: 5BB6619C45F3229F7EE80E46E99C41488892E6B1
llID: 356A192B7913B04C54574D18C28D46E6395428AB
Active, Inserted 12/23/2014 14:39:50 (UTC 12/23/2014 11:39:50)
ObjId: 55319, GroupMap 0x00000002, objType 0x02, bypassRecogToken NULL, flags 0000
Peer Group Member, GroupId: 55318
The backup object (HL_NAME: \msdb\full\ empty LL_NAME) and the temporary object (HL_NAME: \msdb\full.2014122314395000001430\ LL_NAME: 1) are members of the same peer group.
Resolving The Problem
During the normal backup processing, the object which is the peer leader of the group will get inactivated, it is not necessary for the temporary object to be deactivated and it remains in an active state.
When the group leader object expires or is removed from the Tivoli Storage Manager server, this will expire all group members. Even if the group members are in an active state, all objects from the peer group will be deleted as soon as its leader is expired/removed.
