Restore VM operation fails with ANS9365E error and API return code 28

Troubleshooting

Problem

A RESTORE VM command is run to restore a VMware guest machine. The command fails with the ANS9365E error.

Symptom

An example of errors received follows.

ANS9365E VMware vStorage API error for virtual machine 'VMGUEST'.
TSM function name : __ns2__RetrieveServiceContent
TSM file : vmvisdk.cpp (1984)
API return code : 28
API error message : SOAP 1.1 fault: SOAP-ENV:Client[no subcode]
"Timeout"
Detail: connect failed in tcp_connect()
ANS1026E The session is rejected: There was a communications protocol error.
ANS4152E Failure initializing VMware virtual machine environment.
RC=136. Refer to IBM Tivoli Storage Manager error log for detailed error messages.

Diagnosing The Problem

The errors indicate a network communication failure between the datamover that is used for the restore operation and the VMware vCenter host that is identified by the VMCHOST option.

Resolving The Problem

There can be a few reasons for this problem. Try the following actions to resolve the problem :

  • Make sure that the required communication ports have been opened in the firewall.
  • Make sure that the datamover can ping the VMware vCenter host identified by the VMCHOST option.
  • On the datamover machine, verify that you can use the telnet command to connect to the vCenter host at port 443. For example :
    telnet <vcenterhost> 443
If the telnet command is not successful, either the port is blocked or the vCenter host is not accessible.

In this case, the machine running the vCenter was powered off.
