ANS9999E error during backup of corrupted file

Troubleshooting


Problem

A manual or scheduled backup fails to back up a file and the ANS9999E error is logged. The scheduled backup fails with ANS1028S error and the scheduled event is reported as FAILED with rc=12.

Symptom

The following errors are logged in the dsmerror.log of the client :

ANS9999E ntrc.cpp(765): Received Win32 RC 1 (0x00000001) from FileRead(): ReadFile '<filename>'. Error description: Incorrect function.
ANS1028S An internal program error occurred.

Diagnosing The Problem

When trying to manually copy the same file using the Windows copy/paste function, the copy operation fails with "Invalid MS-DOS function" error. For example :

Resolving The Problem

The error indicates that the file is corrupted at the operating system level. Resolve the file corruption at the operating system level or exclude the file from backup by using the following dsm.opt file option :

exclude <filename>

Restart the Tivoli Storage Manager client scheduler or client acceptor services for the option change to take effect.
