How to use the IBM Notes & Domino JVM installer

Technote (troubleshooting)

Problem

This technote describes how to use the IBM Notes & Domino JVM installer to update the JVM on Notes and Domino installations.

Resolving the problem

  • Section 1: Obtain the correct JVM patch for your system
  • Section 2: Install Prerequisites
  • Section 3: Install & Uninstall Instructions for Domino servers & Notes clients
  • Section 4. Logs & Licenses

Section 1: Obtain the correct JVM patch for your system
The name of the patch will tell us what systems it can be used to patch the JVM. For example, given the following patch:

    8.5.3.5-8.5.3.6_ClientServer_w32_JVM_Patch_20140320_170422.exe

  • The first part of the name indicates on what versions the patch is intended to be used. We see in the above file name, the patch is valid for all versions starting with 8.5.3 Fix Pack 5 (8.5.3.5) through 8.5.3 Fix Pack 6 (8.5.3.6)
  • Next we can tell if it is intended for the server, client, or both. In the above example, the patch is for both the client and the server.
  • Next we see what OS the patch is intended for. In the above example, we see that this is for patching a Windows 32-bit OS.
  • The last part of the name is the date and version number of the patch.

Refer to the JVM tabs in the technotes linked below for download links to the latest Java patches:

Section 2: Install Prerequisites

#1: Administrator/root privilege:
Ensure that a user account with an administrator role is used to perform the install action. Otherwise, insufficient privilege errors will be met.
  • For windows platforms: If you are a non-admin user, locate and then right-click on the JVM patch application icon. Then from the drop-down menu, select the Run As Administrator option.
  • For non-Windows platforms: Launch the installer with root privilege.

#2. Sufficient hard disk space:
More than 250MB hard disk space is required for the JVM patch installation. Therefore, be sure to provide sufficient hard disk space before you launch the installer.

Section 3: Install & Uninstall Instructions for Domino servers & Notes clients

3.1 - Domino servers
  • Windows install & uninstall instructions
    Windows install:

    - GUI mode:
    <jvmpatcher.exe>

    - Silent mode
    <jvmpatcher.exe>  -s
    Windows uninstall:

    - Silent mode only and does not require "-s" parameter

    or

    <jvmpatcher.exe> -u
  • UNIX install & uninstall instructions
    UNIX Install:

    - Console mode (just pass the standard arguments for InstallAnywhere installers) i.e.

        ./install -i console

    - Silent mode

       ./install -i silent
(with default installer.properties file located in the same directory as install)

       ./install -i silent -f <myresponse.properties> file

    Note: installer.properties file can be recorded with  "./install -r  <myresponse.properties> " option

3.2 - Notes clients

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you receive and apply a Notes client hotfix from IBM, then you must reinstall your current JVM or the latest JVM version available. Notes hotfixes are bundled with the Fix Pack version they are designed for and thus will install and revert the JVM to version provided with the original Fix Pack.
